    Very Handsome and Very Annoying

“How are you feeling? Are you still uncomfortable?”

Lu Zhijian was the first to notice Yan Xucheng stirring.

Yan Xucheng opened his eyes blankly, slowly moving his gaze to Lu Zhijian: “Lu Zhijian?”

    Lu Zhijian: “Yes, it’s me.”

Yan Xucheng blinked at the ceiling. As his chaotic mind cleared, he suddenly remembered the person he had forgotten: “! Where’s Jiangjiang?”

Lu Zhijian asked softly, “Are you referring to Ms. Jiang Mingyi?”

“Yes!” Yan Xucheng looked at him with anticipation.

Lu Zhijian looked a little troubled, “I’m sorry, I didn’t see her. Was she here too?”

Yan Xucheng’s mind, which had just cleared up, became muddled again. He muttered to himself, “That can’t be right, we came to the hospital together, didn’t we?”

Lu Zhijian knew nothing. When he arrived, Yan Xucheng was already unconscious on the hospital bed, so he couldn’t help Yan Xucheng recover his memory now.

But Yan Xucheng’s low, hoarse voice reached Lu Zhijian’s ears. Lu Zhijian looked at Yan Xucheng, who was lost in thought, and quietly withdrew his hand without disturbing him. He poured him a glass of warm water, tested the temperature with the back of his hand, then helped him sit up and fed him the water.

Yan Xucheng was still dazed at the moment. If he had been fully conscious, he would never have obediently drunk water from Lu Zhijian’s hand like this.

The perfectly warm water flowed down his throat, like long-awaited sweet rain finally arriving on a dry riverbed. The scent of grass and wood on Lu Zhijian faded slightly, but the cool aura lingered. Yan Xucheng, who was very close to Lu Zhijian at this moment, naturally smelled the scent of rain.

Rain is the beginning of life.

Yan Xucheng instinctively leaned closer to Lu Zhijian. The dull ache in his brain was soothed, and the frown he had worn all night finally relaxed.

Suddenly, Yan Xucheng’s eyes caught sight of the blue and white striped curtain beside him, and a flash of realization struck him: “I remember! Jiang Mingyi is behind the curtain!”

They had called an ambulance in the middle of the night. At the time, he was in so much pain his consciousness was blurred. The doctor routinely arranged them in a room that happened to have two empty beds. As for the privacy issue between a man and a woman, it was naturally solved with a medical curtain.

With his lost memories returning, Yan Xucheng suddenly recalled how he and Jiang Mingyi had been constantly hissing and sucking in cold air through the curtain, like snake spirits transforming into human form.

Lu Zhijian hesitated, “Should I go ask the nurse?”

He hadn’t heard any sound coming from the other side of the curtain. All night, only Yan Xucheng had been groaning, which suggested that Jiang Mingyi was indeed much easier to care for when sick than Yan Xucheng.

Lu Zhijian went to ask the nurse on duty and returned quickly.

Yan Xucheng looked at the incoming Lu Zhijian with a hopeful expression.

The curtain had no soundproofing, so Lu Zhijian kept his voice very low: “Ms. Jiang’s symptoms are milder than yours, but she was overly fatigued and is now asleep.”

“Oh, oh,” Yan Xucheng remembered again, “That’s fine. She hasn’t slept for thirty hours.”

He was relieved now. Once relieved, he felt sleepy again. He lay down and pulled the covers over himself, leaving only a pair of smoky-blue eyes visible.

Lu Zhijian didn’t understand why not sleeping for thirty hours could be described as “fine,” nor did he understand why someone would spend an entire day with a good friend while severely sleep-deprived. Perhaps this was one of their unique activities as good friends. He didn’t understand, but he respected it.

Lu Zhijian sat back down on the chair beside the bed: “You rest well. I’ll be right here.”

Yan Xucheng’s voice came muffled from under the blanket, deliberately lowered: “Lu Zhijian.”

“Hmm?” Lu Zhijian let out a soft, questioning sound from his nose.

Yan Xucheng’s voice was even quieter, but it clearly reached Lu Zhijian’s ears, “You’re so good.”

Lu Zhijian softly “hmm’d” in response, silently blushing.

Yan Xucheng didn’t realize that his own face was also very hot at the moment. Clearly, he had remembered his insistence on holding Lu Zhijian’s hand.

A unique atmosphere flowed through the quiet ward—a hazy, indescribable feeling. They were only separated by a thin curtain, which could be lifted by a gentle breeze, yet they tacitly agreed not to think about it, not to explore it.

Neither of them moved. The one lying on the bed and the one sitting on the chair both had their eyes closed, but they both knew the other was awake.

Yan Xucheng didn’t know when he fell asleep. He had a very long dream, though he couldn’t recall what it was about, only that a sudden feeling of joy took over his mind. Yan Xucheng burrowed deeper into the blanket, wanting to return to the dream, but he became increasingly awake.

He simply opened his eyes and quietly watched Lu Zhijian, who was dozing beside the bed. Lu Zhijian’s black shirt hadn’t been carefully tidied by its owner; the glossy fabric was creased with several deep wrinkles, and his trench coat was also messy from the strenuous activity.

Lu Zhijian must have been very anxious, as he usually paid great attention to his appearance. Although he didn’t spend half an hour meticulously coordinating his outfit every day like Yan Xucheng, since the day Yan Xucheng met him, his clothes had always been neat and wrinkle-free.

But Lu Zhijian’s face was there, coupled with his six-foot-three height and golden ratio physique; he looked good enough even dressed casually. These harmless little flaws actually gave Lu Zhijian a hint of uninhibited charm at this moment.

Yan Xucheng deliberately made a sound, sat up, and threw off the blanket. Sure enough, Lu Zhijian opened his eyes immediately to look at him, his deep brown eyes clear and bright.

Lu Zhijian subtly pressed his rapidly beating heart, his eyes clear: “Not sleeping anymore?”

Yan Xucheng’s answer was completely irrelevant: “I suddenly realized you’re so handsome.”

Lu Zhijian paused. He leaned over and touched Yan Xucheng’s forehead. Hmm, it was cool. “How are you? Are you still uncomfortable anywhere?”

Even now, he hadn’t adapted to Yan Xucheng’s overly jumpy thought process, and he didn’t know how to handle such a direct compliment. In his fluster, he could only deflect the topic.

Yan Xucheng shook his head, his crimson hair flowing like wind through wheat fields with his movement: “I’m fine now. You’re so handsome.”

Lu Zhijian didn’t know how these two sentences were connected. He solemnly accepted the compliment: “Thank you.” Then he quickly changed the subject, “Want to sleep a little longer?”

“No, what time is it now?” The lights in the ward were on all the time, and the window was on the other side, where Jiang Mingyi was sleeping. Neither of them could go over, so they couldn’t judge the approximate time by the sky.

Lu Zhijian instinctively looked at his wrist, only to see it bare. He had been too rushed last night and hadn’t worn his watch.

So he took out his phone. “It’s 5:30.”

“5:30…” Yan Xucheng murmured. He was fine now, but the pain last night had been too severe, and he still felt weak. However, he couldn’t lie down anymore.

Looking at Lu Zhijian, who had sat by the bed all night, he was uncharacteristically embarrassed: “How about I take you back to rest? You must be tired after staying up all night.”

“No need. You’re still sick, you should rest well.” Lu Zhijian refused immediately. He occasionally experienced insomnia, so staying up one night wouldn’t affect him much. Moreover, he felt his mental state was good right now.

Yan Xucheng also had his own persistence. He emphasized his physical condition again: “I’m fine! I’m fine. Let’s not argue anymore. Let’s go get breakfast first, and bring some back for Jiang Mingyi. Oh, right, what hospital is this?”

    “Jing University Third Hospital.”

“Wha—what—?!!!” Yan Xucheng was shocked. His pale little face, slightly wan from his recent illness, now lacked any color, like a wilted rose after a storm. He confirmed in disbelief, “Where did you say this is?”

Lu Zhijian didn’t understand why Yan Xucheng reacted so strongly. He hesitated before speaking: “Jing University Third Hospital?” At the same time, he prepared to catch Yan Xucheng.

Thankfully, Yan Xucheng was truly better, or perhaps his desire to escape this place was so strong that it kept him from collapsing.

He tremblingly grabbed Lu Zhijian’s hand. At this point, he didn’t care about Jiang Mingyi, who was still in deep sleep. He squeezed out a few words from his throat: “Go, let’s hurry and go!!!”

Lu Zhijian didn’t know what was happening, but he reliably led Yan Xucheng away. Before leaving, he specifically went to pay the bill for Jiang Mingyi, who was sleeping next door to Yan Xucheng and still unconscious.

While Lu Zhijian was moving, Yan Xucheng obediently hid behind him, wearing a mask the entire time.

After leaving the hospital and getting into the car Lu Zhijian had driven, Yan Xucheng finally took off his mask and let out a long breath: “Phew—”

Lu Zhijian sat in the passenger seat, looking like he wanted to speak but held back.

Yan Xucheng knew what he wanted to ask and proactively explained: “Didn’t I tell you why I pursued my doctorate when we were in Country F?”

Lu Zhijian remembered clearly: “You said it was because the interpersonal relationships at your workplace were bad.”

Yan Xucheng slapped Lu Zhijian’s thigh, “Exactly! This is where I used to work.”

“Ah, I see.” Lu Zhijian didn’t know what he should be focusing on now—Yan Xucheng’s hand or Yan Xucheng’s words.

Yan Xucheng was immersed in his own emotions. He covered his face with his hands: “If my annoying former colleagues found out I ended up in the hospital because I ate too much ice cream, I’d become a tourist attraction to be viewed in rotation, and I’d be mocked and ridiculed!”

    That sounded truly terrifying.

Lu Zhijian was angry. How could there be such bad people in the world, treating others’ suffering as entertainment!

But he couldn’t offer any particularly effective comfort, so he could only place his hand on Yan Xucheng’s shoulder and promise him: “That won’t happen!”

He spoke very seriously, and Yan Xucheng, knowing Lu Zhijian’s background, understood he wasn’t joking.

Lu Zhijian couldn’t control other people’s thoughts, but at least he could ensure they didn’t appear in front of him.

Actually, Yan Xucheng was just complaining. If Jiang Mingyi were here, she would definitely join him in trash-talking his former colleagues. But seeing how serious Lu Zhijian was, Yan Xucheng suddenly panicked. He didn’t know why he was panicking, but Lu Zhijian’s gaze inexplicably made him nervous.

He kept fiddling with his hair, as if suddenly realizing it was messy, and his eyes darted around: “Oh, right, um, why are we both sitting in the back? Then no one is driving, haha—”

Lu Zhijian looked like he wanted to speak but held back.
