BFET Chapter 51

Although the Xin’nan Safety Zone wasn’t particularly far from the No. 9 Contact Point where Xie Yi and Shen Shu were located, it would still take at least five or six hours by car.
Xie Yi and Shen Shu searched around the contact point and eventually found a few dilapidated cars near a collapsed and sunken ruin.
After some picking and choosing, they barely managed to salvage one that could run from the pile of junk.
Although the car’s camouflage function was damaged and the roof was gone, they managed to get it started after some tinkering.
The more troublesome problem was the car’s energy supply.
Nowadays, vehicles don’t use fuel or ordinary battery power, but a substance extracted from a special ore called source material. After research and continuous experimentation, the research institute widely adopted it after confirming its safety and stability.
Under normal circumstances, a piece of source material could stably maintain the kinetic energy of this type of small car for at least three months, until it was completely exhausted and turned into a piece of broken rock.
However, the source material in this car was full of cracks. As soon as it was started, it would warn of an overloaded energy supply system, and they could only adapt to the continuous energy leakage by raising the system threshold.
Not to mention lasting for months, Xie Yi doubted whether this thing could last for five or six hours.
But all the scrap metal they saw around was full of broken stones, and they couldn’t find a replacement. It seemed that they had no choice but to make do with it.
Ignoring the flashing red warnings on the control panel, Xie Yi drove the car, which rattled and creaked incessantly, onto the road.
“Keep an eye on the surroundings.” Xie Yi steered the car with one hand, pulled up the map he had previously imported from the control panel with the other, and didn’t forget to instruct Shen Shu, “This car has no camouflage.”
What he meant was that without camouflage to cover them, they and the car were too conspicuous and easily spotted. He wanted Shen Shu to pay attention to the surroundings and avoid being suddenly attacked.
The surnamed Shen understood and implemented it, but probably wasn’t used to this kind of long-term dynamic surveillance. He lost interest in less than a minute.
However, even though he lost interest, he didn’t directly give up. Instead, in the long, boring minute, he figured out a “good method” that wouldn’t tire him out too much.
This “good method” made Xie Yi suddenly realize that the aura of the person beside him had changed only three minutes after he finished speaking. Before he could turn his head, a dozen small mutated entities suddenly appeared around the speeding “convertible” car.
Xie Yi almost slammed the accelerator to the floor and reached for his gun, but found that these things had no intention of attacking.
“…” He realized something in a flash and turned to look at the passenger seat.
Sensing the gaze beside him, Shen Shu turned his head and met Xie Yi’s somewhat complicated gaze with his now lighter-colored pupils, “What’s wrong?”
“What are you doing?” Xie Yi withdrew his gaze and looked ahead again, but his eyes still had some peripheral vision on Shen Shu. His tone still contained complexity, “Why summon these things?”
“Didn’t the captain tell me to pay attention to the surroundings?” Shen Shu didn’t think there was anything wrong with what he did, “I’m making the most of them, and I’m practicing a bit.”
What he was practicing was self-evident.
Xie Yi’s eyebrows twitched. He even inexplicably felt that what Shen Shu said made sense, whether it was making the most of them or practicing.
“…Let these things spread out.” Xie Yi quickly digested and understood, and continued in a deep voice, “Probe forward.”
As he spoke, Shen Shu moved his mind, and the mutated entities that had been surrounding them split into several groups and quickly disappeared from their sight.
The pollution imbalance caused by the mutated entities’ uncontrolled scurrying had completely destroyed all the boundaries of the enclosed zone. The smart terminal could no longer capture any signals from any Tagging Anchors nearby.
Xie Yi could only find his way on the map he had previously exported from the communication device, and then use Shen Shu to control those low-level mutated entities to probe the way, avoiding unnecessary troubles, and heading towards Xin’nan after several twists and turns.
“Hey, it’s been an hour.” Xie Yi keenly noticed that Shen Shu’s breathing was a bit heavier than before, “Stop if you can’t handle it.”
Shen Shu only moved when he heard this, but didn’t reply.
He was indeed approaching his limit. He was barely able to maintain control amidst the dense, continuous stinging pain constantly coming from the acupoints on both sides of his temples and the increasingly noisy mind, forcibly maintaining the connection with those things.
Another five minutes passed.
Shen Shu suddenly gasped, and his light-colored pupils were obviously рассеянные.
Xie Yi had been keeping an eye on him, and hearing the sound, he suddenly braked, turned sideways and directly grabbed his arm, pulled him over, and shouted subconsciously, raising his voice, “Hey, Shen Shu!”
The moment all kinds of noisy and angry roars were about to engulf his brain, the mental control that had been stretched to the extreme suddenly broke, causing Shen Shu to feel a moment of trance.
He instinctively raised his hand and tightly grabbed the hand that Xie Yi was holding him with. When he looked up and met Xie Yi’s eyes, his previously obviously рассеянные pupils slowly focused again, and at the same time, the color of his pupils gradually deepened.
In the brain, which felt like it was being pricked with needles, all the fierce roars receded as the control broke. Shen Shu’s severed thoughts reconnected, and what he saw was Xie Yi’s solemn and worried face.
He moved his lips imperceptibly, but didn’t say anything.
Seeing that his eyes seemed to be a little clearer, Xie Yi tentatively called out again, “Shen Shu?”
Shen Shu responded after a slow beat, “…Yeah?”
Xie Yi couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. The next second, he forcibly pulled out the hand that Shen Shu was holding tightly, and slapped him on the head, “Can’t you understand the four words ‘Stop when you are ready’ (know when to stop)?”
Shen Shu, who had just regained his senses: “…”
“How are you?” Xie Yi restarted the car.
Shen Shu rubbed his head and leaned back in the seat, “I’m fine, it’s just too noisy, and I have a bit of a headache. I’ll be fine after a while.”
Xie Yi glanced at him, “When you’re sharing your brain with these things, you better maintain your mental advantage.”
Shen Shu turned his head to look at him, and thought about what he said, “Are you afraid of me being counter-controlled?”
Xie Yi didn’t comment.
In his view, Shen Shu’s influence and control over the mutated entities was nothing more than seizing control by overwhelmingly suppressing the other party’s thoughts and consciousness in a connected brain.
This was similar to his use of Abyss.
Seeing that Xie Yi didn’t speak anymore, Shen Shu didn’t continue to ask.
He leaned back in the seat again and closed his eyes to rest.
No one spoke in the car anymore, and the surroundings suddenly became quiet.
However, after only two minutes of quiet, Shen Shu suddenly opened his eyes again, “I remembered something.”
Xie Yi slightly turned his head and gave him a sidelong glance.
“Over there.” Shen Shu pointed in a direction, “Before the control broke, I seemed to see someone over there.”
Xie Yi slammed on the brakes, and the tires rubbed against the ground, making a sharp screeching sound, “Are you sure?”
“Not sure.” Shen Shu said frankly, “I only had time to take a glance.”
Although he didn’t know the specific departure time of the rescue team, it hadn’t been more than twelve hours since the incident. Even if the rescue team took the shortest route, in terms of time, the people over there were unlikely to be them.
But…
Xie Yi didn’t hesitate at all. He turned the steering wheel and directly stepped on the accelerator again, speeding towards the direction Shen Shu pointed!
