    Saving People

A rush of wind, carrying warmth, swept in from all directions.

Xie Yi floored the accelerator, pushing his driving skills to the limit as he crashed through the sparse, uneven forest.

The sounds of something rapidly crawling, mixed with panting, gunshots, and the constant tearing of something, faintly echoed from ahead. Shen Shu, who had been keeping his head down, looked up amidst the jostling.

“You didn’t say there were Mutated Entities besides people,” Xie Yi said, narrowing his eyes.

He switched from the accelerator to the brake, the tires screeching against the ground as he executed a skillful and beautiful drift, narrowly avoiding a shattered, overgrown tree, and stopped hard against its roots.

“Those two seem to be running this way with something,” Shen Shu said, lightly steadying himself against the car door. “Captain, are you sure you want to stop here?”

Xie Yi grabbed the car door and leaped out. “Enough nonsense. This is our only vehicle. Kill whatever’s coming before we get there.”

The two being pursued appeared to be injured, but around them, small and large wind spheres were rapidly coalescing.

Then, as one of them slashed his hand forward, all the wind spheres, as if carrying insulting blades, shot directly towards their front.

In front of them, a dozen tail-like appendages were constantly tearing, as if suddenly opening countless bloody maws. In the next second, they charged forward to meet the wind spheres, swallowing them whole!

The swallowed wind spheres exploded within the dozen tails, but only created a few small blood blooms. The tails remained vigorous.

The two obviously hadn’t expected this and were stunned in place, forgetting to react.

In that split-second of hesitation, the ground at their feet suddenly bulged—

The bulging ground quickly cracked open, and by the time the two realized it, three or four miniature, slender tails had already wrapped around the ankle of the nearest person, dragging him down!

The person fell directly to the ground, his head spinning, and before he could recover, the scalding thing around his ankle was dragging him backward.

    “Xu Wei!”

The other person who hadn’t been caught shouted in horror, almost instinctively reaching out to grab Xu Wei’s hand. “Quick, use a wind blade to cut those things off!”

As he spoke, the ground around them also began to bulge, the raised mounds covered with cracks in the blink of an eye. When the two saw this, their faces turned deathly pale: It’s over.

At that moment, Xu Wei suddenly heard three gunshots, and the heavy pulling sensation that had been gripping him disappeared.

Someone landed beside them, and in a series of rapid gunshots, he only had time to hear a voice: “Stand firm.”

He was then yanked by the back of his collar and thrown to the side, followed by his companion.

As Xie Yi threw the two people away, the muzzle of the gun in his hand swept around the surrounding mounds, and a dark, viscous liquid oozed from the torn ground.

The ground trembled, as if something were moving beneath.

Xie Yi frowned, and looked up ahead.

While he was saving people, Shen Shu had been nimbly dodging and leaping among the dozen tails. He had just flipped over them.

Suddenly remembering something, Xie Yi’s brow twitched. “Shen Shu, be careful!”

Just as he shouted, there was a deafening roar, and a fleshy bulge covered in fine, whisker-like tendrils suddenly burst from the middle of the tails. The bulge expanded and contracted, then “bloomed” like a flower into a huge, bloody maw!

The bloody maw had a clear target, lunging directly at Shen Shu.

Shen Shu had only completed two-thirds of his flip and hadn’t completely landed, but he didn’t panic. As if he wasn’t about to be devoured, he simply raised his eyes slightly.

When his gaze fell on the bloody maw, his deep pupils completely faded away, silently turning into transparent and pale glass beads.

The bloody maw, and the dozen tails that were sweeping around, froze in that instant.

Xie Yi, who had already approached, noticed this immediately. His figure suddenly accelerated. Confirming Shen Shu’s safety with a glance, he seized the opportunity, switching from gun to blade in an instant. Abyss, flashing with red light, plunged completely into the fleshy bulge!

Scaly patterns of varying depths instantly surfaced on his exposed skin, soon covering him like armor.

Countless shrill screams erupted from all directions.

The dozen tails that had been frozen the previous second lashed out, emitting sharp screeches, and the fleshy bulge tore apart, as if mouths were growing out of thin air.

Xie Yi’s expression didn’t change. He nimbly and skillfully avoided the tails constantly sweeping towards him.

He was even oblivious to the mouths on the bulge that were almost desperately lunging at him, gripping Abyss tightly and moving along the fleshy bulge as if guided by a target.

The screams grew louder and louder, until the fleshy bulge was almost shapeless, purulent blood flowed all over the ground, and even seven or eight of its own tails were stuck in it. Finally, it gave up.

Drawing Abyss, Xie Yi didn’t even look at his mangled hand and turned to walk towards Shen Shu.

“Captain, you’re a little slow,” Shen Shu said, leaning against a tree trunk that had been cut in half, staring straight at Xie Yi with his glass-bead eyes.

Xie Yi’s gaze fell on his pale face. “How are you?”

“Not good,” Shen Shu said, straightening up slightly. He squinted as he spoke, as if forcing himself to concentrate. “I have a lot of voices in my head right now, I might need to rest and digest a bit.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he swayed, and in the next second, he fell directly towards Xie Yi!
