BFET Chapter 57
by BLReadsThe tires rubbed against the ground, creating a sharp, piercing sound.
Xie Yi spun the steering wheel, causing the entire vehicle to make a sharp turn in place, the rear of the armored car colliding with a small Mutated Entity with a loud “bang.”
Not satisfied, the armored car shook violently for a moment before slamming backward into the Mutated Entity again!
At that moment, the car’s radio crackled a few times.
Xie Yi glanced at it and immediately reached out to press a few buttons next to the control panel. Then, he heard a familiar voice coming through – it was Zhe Lian: “Attention everyone, we absolutely cannot let the Mutated Entities get close to the rescue vehicle!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Xie Yi saw in the rearview mirror that all the armored cars that had scattered around opened fire, the gunfire mixed with various abilities, charging at the Mutated Entities once more!
“Shen Shu,” Xie Yi said, staring at the rearview mirror, “I’ll give you a chance to play.”
Shen Shu looked at him upon hearing this, and Xie Yi continued, “I’ll be your driver, and you can clear out the Mutated Entities that get close.”
Shen Shu raised his eyebrows: “Anything goes?”
“Although I’d like to say yes, I can’t,” Xie Yi pointed with his eyes, “Don’t be too flashy. Keep it under control, use the vehicle’s weapons, and shoot however you want. I’ll cooperate!”
Although Shen Shu looked regretful, he surprisingly didn’t refuse. He turned and went to the back.
The roar of gunfire stirred up waves of heat and sparks, suppressing the Mutated Entity groups that were trying to advance. Among them, a vehicle slightly smaller than the surrounding armored cars weaved through the gunfire and abilities, its path leaving behind a trail of splattered flesh and blood like mud.
While the armored car group and the Mutated Entity group were locked in a stalemate, the rescue vehicle finally made it two-thirds of the way across the trestle bridge.
Shen Shu was playing with the vehicle-mounted machine gun, searching for his next target through the scope, when suddenly, his hand stopped.
His hand gripping the machine gun handle suddenly clenched, and then the redTexture markings on his face, which had never faded, seemed to come alive, turning even more scarlet.
Xie Yi, who had been absentmindedly watching his surroundings in the rearview mirror, suddenly felt a familiar, chilling aura behind him. He was startled and quickly turned his head: “Shen Shu? What’s wrong?”
However, Shen Shu in the back didn’t move at all and didn’t respond.
Xie Yi pursed his lips and immediately turned the steering wheel, preparing to temporarily withdraw and determine Shen Shu’s condition. However, before he could completely turn the vehicle, he heard a very soft sigh pass by his ear!
A sudden sense of horror spread throughout his body. Just as Xie Yi was about to figure out whether the sigh he just heard was an illusion or something else, all the Mutated Entities that had been attacking them suddenly stopped!
This sudden situation stunned everyone. Although the gunfire didn’t stop, many armored cars stopped one after another. Then, they saw these Mutated Entities collectively raise their heads and let out a series of uniform and ear-piercing shrieks.
The shrieks, like demonic sounds piercing their ears, made their scalps tingle. Someone’s voice came from the radio, asking what these things were calling for.
But no one could answer him.
Xie Yi stared at the Mutated Entities from the car window with a tense expression, and a ridiculous thought inexplicably popped into his head. Were these things summoning something?
As if knowing his thoughts, the Mutated Entities suddenly stopped, and the moment the shrieks disappeared, everyone became vigilant.
However, to their surprise, the surrounding Mutated Entity groups didn’t attack them again. Instead, they turned around and ran madly in another direction without looking back!
Xie Yi’s car was parked sideways in the middle, his eyes never leaving the Mutated Entities that were gradually moving away, but he felt uneasy.
“Th-those things just left like that?” A voice came from the car radio. “Are we safe?”
“It seems…”
“It feels a bit like a dream. Why didn’t they leave when they were besieging us before?”
“Hey, now that they’ve left here, what about Lin Captain and the others? Will they leave like this too?”
“Alright, everyone, stop chatting and don’t be stunned. No matter why those things suddenly left, there’s no guarantee they won’t come back. Let’s retreat quickly. We can’t waste Lin Captain’s efforts.” Zhe Lian interrupted at the right time, “Who’s in the car parked in the middle? Car 75287, move, move, don’t be stunned.”
Zhe Lian’s shout brought Xie Yi’s attention back. He closed his eyes, reached out, and pressed a button next to the control panel. “It’s me, Xie Yi.”
Then he casually made an excuse to explain: “Sorry, I hit something hard just now and I’m still recovering. I’ll catch up.”
When Zhe Lian heard it was him, he was immediately a little embarrassed and quickly responded with a few “okay”s, telling him to be careful.
Xie Yi turned off the car radio’s response button, then immediately turned around, climbed into the back of the car, and dragged Shen Shu over in his arms.
“Shen Shu? How are you?” Xie Yi felt that his hands were wet, Shen Shu was covered in cold sweat!
He frowned and looked at Shen Shu’s pale face, seeing that the blood-coloredTexture markings on his face had almost climbed from his jaw to cover half of his face. The glass-like pupils in his half-closed eyes clearly had no focus, as if he was trapped in a nightmare.
Xie Yi had no choice but to temporarily settle Shen Shu in the passenger seat and follow the rescue team’s convoy to retreat.
After the rescue convoy left the trestle bridge, they headed towards the hub along the route arranged by Lin Zhixu. About half an hour later, a dozen small armored cars caught up with them.
“Is that Lin Captain?” Zhe Lian’s excited voice came from the car radio.
“It’s us,” Lin Zhixu replied. “How are you guys? Was the journey smooth?”
“It was pretty smooth,” Zhe Lian replied. “Except we had a string of tails chasing us when we retreated, but that string of tails ran away on their own later, so we weren’t delayed for too long.”
“They ran away on their own too?” Lin Zhixu’s voice carried a hint of surprise.
Before Zhe Lian could speak, Xie Yi’s voice came from the car radio, “Too? Lin Captain, so the Mutated Entities you led away did the same?”
“Yes,” Lin Zhixu let out a heavy breath. “Those things also raised their heads and howled for a while before they left. We thought they were gathering, but we didn’t expect them to suddenly run away.”
Xie Yi: “Lin Captain, do you remember the direction they ran in? Was it southwest?”
“Direction?” Lin Zhixu frowned. “Now that you mention it, it does seem to be southwest. Wait, that direction—”
“The Kui City Safety Zone is in that direction,” Xie Yi took over his words. “I think we’d better speed up our return journey.”
