    Chapter Index

The enemy seemed to have given up in the final minute of the objective capture, not organizing another attack for a long time. The Holy Church was an easy point to defend and difficult to attack, and the Assault Player who had taken on the role of commander relaxed his guard and shifted the topic of conversation elsewhere.

Though he was called the commander, the team voice chat sounded more like a conversation between two Assault Players.

There was no helping it; Xie Wei wasn’t speaking, and the Sniper’s role was relatively minor on this map, so the Assault Players didn’t try to engage him. Xu Ziyan, due to his nervousness, also remained silent, only executing commands silently when occasionally directed to reposition or provide support.

The two Assault Players chatted back and forth, constantly pushing forward, switching between Medic and Sniper roles. They even developed a sense of mutual appreciation, agreeing to add each other as friends and Duo Queue in the next match.

Xu Ziyan crouched in a small house, listening to their conversation while clutching his Medic gun. His eyes, however, were fixed on the roof of a small shop not far away.

Sunlight glinted, catching the muzzle of the Sniper rifle hidden behind the eaves.

    That was Xie Wei’s location.

Xu Ziyan had encountered Xie Wei before, but today was different. Previously, he was just a random passerby to Xie Wei. Now, they knew each other, and had even shared the most intimate relationship…

At this thought, Xu Ziyan paused, his eyebrows furrowing slightly, then he let out a soft, self-mocking laugh, pulling at the corner of his mouth.

He had been Marked and had genuinely liked Xie Wei for many years. That was why, after the accident, he hadn’t felt revulsion, only shame and joy.

But to Xie Wei, he was probably nothing more than a frivolous Omega who sold his body to get onto the team. As a fan, Xu Ziyan naturally knew how clean-living Xie Wei was, with virtually no romantic relationships. He was the only exception where things had gone wrong.

These past few days, Xu Ziyan had wavered between “regret” and “no regret” hundreds of times, speculating endlessly about Xie Wei’s thoughts. He had even prepared how to act as if they were meeting for the first time when they next saw each other.

Yet, the reality was that Xie Wei hadn’t appeared once since the day he joined the team, and their chat history on Line stopped at that single character. Everything seemed to suggest their relationship had ended there.

Xu Ziyan knew this was the best outcome, but encountering him again today, he couldn’t control his emotions. He was so excited and nervous that his hands were trembling.

Giving him an Injector at the start, then risking his life to run to the clock tower just to throw a smoke grenade… Xu Ziyan couldn’t even explain what was going through his mind. These actions were certainly born of affection and liking, but to Xie Wei, they were likely just added trouble.

Putting himself in Xie Wei’s shoes, if such a connected person existed, Xu Ziyan would want that person as far away from him as possible.

Xu Ziyan bit his lip, unconsciously tightening his grip on the Medic gun. At the top of the interface, the objective capture progress bar had reached ninety percent. He hesitated for a moment, then stood up, wanting to move closer to Xie Wei.

The instant he stood up, a faint sound rang out behind him, as if something had landed.

Xu Ziyan didn’t react at first, but then immediately realized what the sound was—someone had thrown a grenade through the window!

Having assumed the enemy had stopped resisting, Xu Ziyan hadn’t been constantly moving and hiding as before. Seeing the grenade now, he realized they hadn’t stopped resisting; they were waiting for an opportunity! The enemy was confirming his position!

Although the Holy Church was easy to defend, its narrow terrain meant the Sniper outside could offer almost no help. If the friendly team lacked a Medic while the enemy had one, it would be easy to lose the point to a sneak attack.

Normally, Xu Ziyan should have been inside the Holy Church with the other two Assault Players, defending the point and waiting. But because of his personal feelings, he had run outside to a spot where he could see Xie Wei.

Such a rookie mistake shouldn’t happen at this rank. If the point was lost, he would take all the blame.

Xu Ziyan instinctively put away his gun, crouched, then sprinted and side-rolled.

His reaction was quick, but unfortunately, it was too late. The moment his fingers touched the door frame, the grenade exploded behind him. The heat wave and shockwave propelled him out the door, instantly dropping his healthy HP to zero.

The loud explosion naturally drew everyone else’s attention.

In the team voice chat, the two Assault Players guarding the Holy Church immediately stopped talking, realizing the situation was bad. Xie Wei, positioned high up, saw the situation more clearly—not far away, a figure and fragments of the building were blasted out the door amidst thick smoke.

“Holy crap…” The Assault Player who had taken command stared blankly at the distant smoke. “Does anyone even use grenades on this map? We haven’t seen him use one before; that’s too patient.”

“Forget that,” the other Assault Player jumped off a table in the church, raising his gun alertly. “That grenade was aimed at our Medic. It’s three against four now; we might not hold the point.”

The commander nodded. “Yeah, you watch the back window, I’ll watch the main door.”

    “OK.”

Xie Wei listened silently to the two Assault Players communicating in the voice channel. He didn’t speak, instead lowering his head to the scope, his gaze rapidly searching for enemy traces around the exploded house.

A grenade is a short-range explosive. Since it was thrown accurately into the house, it meant the thrower was not far from the blast site.

If they could eliminate that person, even without the Medic for the next defense, they would still have a fighting chance.

Xie Wei didn’t blame Xu Ziyan at all for the mistake caused by his personal feelings. In fact, he had noticed the Omega’s actions earlier but had tacitly allowed it.

His finger tightened on the trigger, and he focused intently on every corner. Suddenly, a figure staggered up from the ruins after the explosion.

Xie Wei was stunned, then realized with surprise that this figure was none other than Xu Ziyan, whom everyone had assumed was dead!

A grenade is a high-damage area-of-effect weapon; a Medic shouldn’t be able to withstand the blast’s impact. Xie Wei was genuinely surprised and couldn’t help but ask, “You’re still alive?”

The sudden appearance of a third voice in the voice channel startled everyone.

Xu Ziyan had just struggled to climb out of the rubble and was frantically healing himself. Hearing Xie Wei’s question, he quickly replied, “Alive, alive. I’m so sorry, so sorry, this one’s on me…”

“No, buddy!” The commander interrupted Xu Ziyan’s apology, exclaiming happily, “Awesome! You didn’t die! How did you do that?”

Xu Ziyan continued healing himself, dodging and weaving as he rushed toward the Holy Church, all while answering his teammates’ questions. “I just… tried to run to the very edge, then put on a shield and used an Injector. That’s it. It was just luck that I didn’t die.”

He then said apologetically, “I’m really sorry, guys, my bad. I won’t run off next time.”

As he spoke, he reached the Holy Church. The enemy clearly thought Xu Ziyan was dead, so even their Sniper had come out to attack, completely disregarding the next wave. Xu Ziyan didn’t hesitate, immediately throwing down an armor pack and a smoke grenade, and using his Medic gun to aggressively steal damage from the backline. The two Assault Players inside worked together, completely dismantling the enemy’s offensive push.

The last few enemies who ran out of the Holy Church, trying to survive another moment, were all eliminated one by one by Xie Wei, who had been waiting outside. Game won.

The commander let out a sigh of relief and gave Xu Ziyan a huge thumbs-up. “Impressive, brother. Add me as a friend; let’s Duo Queue sometime.”

Xu Ziyan smiled. “Not impressive, just lucky.”

Hearing this, Xie Wei raised an eyebrow noncommittally.

    Lucky?

Xu Ziyan had made it sound simple, but Xie Wei knew exactly how difficult it was to execute that series of actions in the split-second reaction time available. Sprinting, side-rolling, simultaneously applying an armor pack, and then, after the armor broke, watching his HP to use an Injector. Even a slight delay would mean the healing wouldn’t be enough to withstand the blast damage, and all these actions happened in the blink of an eye.

In other words, Xu Ziyan had managed to sustain two extra health bars in one second, purely through reaction time and skill.

    Interesting.

This Omega clearly had genuine skill.

But if he had this kind of skill, why did he do what he did?

Xie Wei recalled Xu Ziyan, who had fallen asleep from exhaustion in the training room a few days ago. He lowered his gaze, pondered for a moment, picked up his phone, and opened the chat window with Head Coach Yu Guangzhou.

The last message was a competition poster sent by Yu Guangzhou.

Zhou: [Poster] The new Rookie Cup is about to start. I wonder if there are any good prospects we can select.

    Xie Wei raised his finger.

Xie Wei: Is anyone from our team participating?

    Yu Guangzhou replied quickly.

Zhou: We have slots. We have a few candidates for now, but nothing is finalized. Why?

Xie Wei: I recommend someone to you.

In the Coach’s office, Yu Guangzhou was surprised. An ID involuntarily surfaced in his mind.

Just a few months ago, Xie Wei, who never involved himself with romance or team selections, suddenly approached him, saying he wanted to introduce a Medic to the second team. That Medic was a Youth Training Camp Member, and an Omega at that.

If it had been anyone else, Yu Guangzhou would have been suspicious, but Xie Wei’s reputation was impeccable, so he didn’t think much of it and agreed. He teased him for a couple of days and then dropped it.

Moreover, that Medic had performed very well after joining the second team. Lu Donglou had praised him several times, so Yu Guangzhou thought even less of it, assuming Xie Wei was simply dedicated to the team and helping to fill the vacant Medic position in the second team.

    But now…

He hesitated, typing the ID he had in mind into the chat box. At the same time, Xie Wei’s message came through, both appearing almost simultaneously in the chat.

    Zhou: Ice?

    Xie Wei: Ice.
