    Chapter 16

As the victory settlement screen popped up, Xu Ziyan’s tightly wound nerves finally relaxed completely. He let out a long breath, spread his hand, and found that his right hand, which had been gripping the mouse, was slick with sweat.

His teammates in the voice channel said their goodbyes and left one after another. Soon, Xie Wei’s ID Shining also turned gray. Xu Ziyan moved his mouse over it, hesitated repeatedly, but still didn’t click the add friend button.

He leaned back against the chair, stretched, and looked to the side. Yuan Shaofeng was loudly directing his teammates to charge Point A with him. Meng Cang followed silently behind him. Bai Ke was solo queuing, and judging by his screen, he was currently squatting in a patch of woods, waiting to ambush someone.

This was the TWG second team training room. Upstairs was the first team training room, where Xie Wei was.

He really wanted to see Xie Wei.

He wanted to be closer to him, to smell the scent of his Pheromone, and to have him hold him.

The craving heart stirred restlessly in his chest, practically screaming to break free. Xu Ziyan realized something was wrong and quickly suppressed the restless emotion. He hastily pulled open the drawer beside him, took out an item, hid it in his palm, and rushed out of the training room.

He accidentally bumped his chair on the way out. Yuan Shaofeng, hearing the noise, turned his head and mumbled curiously, “What’s wrong with Ice? Did he eat something bad? He’s in such a hurry.”

Bai Ke twitched his lips at the remark, smiling faintly, “None of your business. Stop worrying.”

Xu Ziyan certainly hadn’t eaten anything bad.

He ducked into a cubicle, locked the door, tore open the item hidden in his palm, and then frantically reached behind his neck, ripping off the Scent Blocker and replacing it with the new one in his hand.

Only when the cool Scent Blocker restored his overheated mind to calmness did Xu Ziyan finally sigh in relief, forcing a bitter smile.

This was his first time being marked, and he had been staying up late recently due to the new game version. He was exhausted, and his marked body naturally craved the Alpha’s comfort.

However, it was impossible for Xu Ziyan to seek out Xie Wei for something like this. His favorability rating in Xie Wei’s eyes was already very low. Xu Ziyan certainly hoped to get closer to Xie Wei, but definitely not in this manner.

One accident like that was enough.

Xu Ziyan exhaled, stood up, splashed cold water on his face, and returned to the training room to continue his Ranked Match.

A few days later, Lu Donglou walked into the training room and briefly outlined the arrangements for the afternoon’s scrims. The Medic position was, naturally, Xu Ziyan’s.

Although not officially announced yet, the scrim roster already spoke volumes. When the new season began, Xu Ziyan would be the Main Roster Player Medic for TWG’s second team.

“…One more thing.” Lu Donglou closed the data analysis notebook in his hand. “The new season’s Rookie Cup is about to start.”

Unlike the Rookie Cups for other games, Resist’s Rookie Cup was not hosted by various streaming platforms but was officially organized. Therefore, it garnered high traffic and attention, and many of today’s highly regarded star players emerged from the Rookie Cup.

However, the Rookie Cup format was also unique. The top leagues were 4v4, but the Rookie Cup was strictly 1v1. As a result, Snipers and Medics, who were not suited for close-quarters combat, were not popular in the Rookie Cup. Most Rookie Cup players were Assault Players.

Yuan Shaofeng, who automatically assumed the role, looked bewildered: “Huh? Our second team doesn’t have a rookie Assault Player. Could it be me? Wait, I’ve been playing professionally for so long, I can’t possibly meet the requirements…”

Lu Donglou looked at him with an expression of not wanting to look: “It’s not you.”

“Then who is it?” Bai Ke poked his head out from behind his monitor, asking the question while his eyes were already looking toward the other side of the training room.

Xu Ziyan was sitting in his spot. He turned his head and happened to meet Bai Ke’s gaze.

This second team Sniper had a rather strange personality, incredibly accurate intuition, and sharp eyes. Being looked at by him felt like being seen through, an indescribably odd sensation.

Just as he showed a puzzled expression and looked back, he heard Lu Donglou finish his statement.

“The person TWG is sending to this year’s Rookie Cup is Ice, Xu Ziyan.”

Xu Ziyan was stunned. The Rookie Cup wasn’t a major tournament, but it certainly wasn’t a small one either. Having this opportunity for a promising Assault Player on the team to showcase their skills and get used to the competition rhythm would be excellent. But why was he, a Medic, chosen? How did he end up being selected?

He looked back at Bai Ke, only to see the Beta youth curl his lips into a smile.

He seemed to have anticipated this result.

Xu Ziyan felt a strange feeling in his heart, though he couldn’t pinpoint what was strange, so he simply returned a smile.

Lu Donglou didn’t notice their brief exchange of glances and continued, “Ice, come to the Coach’s office after the scrims. I’ll discuss the competition arrangements with you.”

    Xu Ziyan nodded.

Lu Donglou finished his instructions, waved his hand, and let them resume their individual training.

Xu Ziyan returned to the game interface and clicked the queue button. While waiting, a message lit up in the bottom right corner.

    He clicked it open.

    KK: Ice, tell me honestly.

KK: Do you know someone inside the team?

This phrasing was already very subtle and tactful.

To be more direct, it would be: Ice, did you use connections?

Xu Ziyan remembered his agreement with Xie Wei and decided to play dumb to the end. To avoid saying too much and making a mistake, he cautiously sent only a question mark.

Bai Ke seemed to sense his defensiveness and explained further.

KK: You misunderstood. I’m not questioning your skill or anything. Everyone on the team has seen your performance; there’s no doubt about that.

KK: My intention is simple. I just want to ask if you know anyone on the team, nothing more.

Xu Ziyan didn’t relax his guard because of this and only replied perfunctorily.

    Ice: I don’t know anyone.

    Ice: You’re overthinking it.

Bai Ke also saw his determination to keep quiet and wisely didn’t press further.

In the afternoon, after the scrims, Xu Ziyan went to the Coach’s office as instructed.

To his surprise, the people sitting in the Coach’s office were not just Lu Donglou, but also the first team’s Coach, Yu Guangzhou.

Xu Ziyan couldn’t hide his surprise: “Coach, hello.”

Lu Donglou smiled and motioned for him to sit down: “This is Coach Yu Guangzhou, the head coach of our TWG first team. He was responsible for selecting the Rookie Cup participants. It’s perfect to have him explain the rules to you now.”

Xu Ziyan nodded blankly and sat down as told.

Yu Guangzhou took a sip of tea and subtly observed the young man in front of him.

Even with a critical eye, the Omega before him could be called a beauty. Tall stature, fair skin, long legs, a pair of lively, captivating eyes, full lips, and a gentle, approachable smile even when not laughing. From his demeanor to his speech, he was well-mannered, possessing an indescribable, comfortable aura.

He was indeed a very nice kid.

And with Xie Wei… they seemed compatible.

Wait, wait, what was he thinking? What was with this sense of déjà vu, like a worried parent secretly checking out their child’s romantic partner!

Yu Guangzhou cleared his throat and set down his teacup.

Observing the person was one thing, but getting down to business was essential. He briefly explained the Rookie Cup format and gave Xu Ziyan a group chat number, discussing the 1v1 training process.

The Rookie Cup was an opportunity, but also a pressure. Once he participated, he carried the team’s name. Xu Ziyan was a Medic, and his usual training methods were completely different from the training required for 1v1, meaning his required training doubled.

As he listened to Yu Guangzhou, he silently planned in his mind, feeling a little uncertain: Could he really do this?

After explaining the schedule, Yu Guangzhou picked up his teacup, took another sip of water, looked at the Omega before him, and finally couldn’t resist voicing the probing question that had been lurking in his mind.

“Are you curious why you were chosen to participate in the Rookie Cup?”

Xu Ziyan couldn’t gauge Yu Guangzhou’s intention for asking this and hesitated before nodding: “Yes… based on performance, choosing an Assault Player would probably be better.”

“Our team doesn’t lack this kind of honor. The main goal is to give rookies a chance to practice and grow. It’s been a long time since a rookie Medic appeared in this competition, so it’s also to give the audience some novelty.” Yu Guangzhou smiled. “Of course, those are secondary reasons.”

“The main reason is that someone recommended you to me, and I trust this person’s judgment, plus your recent performance in Ranked Matches has indeed been very impressive.”

    Someone?

    Who?

Someone who could talk to the head coach and recommend a participant for the competition…

    A name leaped to mind.

Xu Ziyan’s eyes widened, and his heart rate suddenly accelerated. His hands, hanging at his sides, involuntarily clenched. He looked up at Yu Guangzhou: “This person is…”

Yu Guangzhou observed his expression and smiled: “It’s Shining, Xie Wei.”

    Thump—

It was as if fireworks had exploded in his mind, dazzling Xu Ziyan and making him dizzy. He suddenly stood up, then realized his mistake, and hastily sat back down, desperately trying to conceal his joy and surprise, but it was already beyond his control.

Xie Wei recommended him. Did this mean he didn’t hate him and had been paying attention to him all along?

The heat that had been suppressed at the back of his neck surged up again. Xu Ziyan desperately maintained his last shred of composure: “Thank you, Coach. I will definitely work hard!”

Seeing his reaction, Yu Guangzhou and Lu Donglou exchanged a look, both understanding the situation.

Yu Guangzhou smiled: “Alright, alright. You must work hard, but don’t neglect rest. You can go back to training now.”

    Xu Ziyan nodded vigorously.

Walking out of the Coach’s office and into the hallway, he touched his face; it was already flushed.

This wasn’t just due to excitement, but also the agitation of his Pheromone.

He started wanting to see Xie Wei again.

He needed to quickly change his Scent Blocker again…

Meanwhile, in the first team training room.

After the scrims ended, Xie Wei returned to his seat, looked around, suddenly frowned, and turned to ask Shen Xiao next to him: “Where’s the Coach?”

“Old Yu?” Shen Xiao habitually wore only one earphone when not playing. “He seemed to have gone over to the second team’s side.”

    “Second team?”

Xie Wei frowned, then recalled Yu Guangzhou’s strange reaction when he recommended Xu Ziyan yesterday.

…That guy wouldn’t have gone to find Xu Ziyan, would he!

Yu Guangzhou had been around the manager Jiang Yuxin for so long that he had become gossipy. Since TWG was a team that didn’t restrict internal relationships as long as they didn’t affect the competition, Yu Guangzhou always had to get involved and gossip whenever there was a hint of something going on between teammates.

If Yu Guangzhou thought he and Xu Ziyan were involved, he was absolutely capable of showing up to watch the drama!

Shen Xiao checked the time, preparing to start his stream to fill his required hours. Before going live, he routinely asked the super-streamer next to him: “Hey, Captain Xie, want to Duo Queue?”

He turned his head, only to find that Xie Wei, who had just sat down, was standing up again and walking out.

Shen Xiao was stunned: “Hey, hey, where are you going?”

Xie Wei ignored him, quickly walked out of the training room, and headed downstairs.
