    Chapter 20

Lately, Lu Donglou had clearly noticed that Xu Ziyan was spending significantly less time in the training room. For others, this might be a sign of laziness, but coming from Xu Ziyan, Lu Donglou felt deeply relieved.

After all, since joining the team, this new Medic had consistently shown extraordinary effort, often training late into the night, and staying in the training room overnight was common. Lu Donglou had been worried he would ruin his health.

Now, Xu Ziyan arrived at the training room on time and left a little later, clearly much healthier. His face was rosy every day, and he was full of energy. Hmm, this was how a young person should be.

    Lu Donglou nodded with satisfaction.

He naturally had no idea that these improvements were not due to sufficient rest, but were all thanks to Xie Wei.

Initially, Xie Wei was a little troubled, wondering if this so-called “companionship” required physical intimacy. Later, he found that simply being in the same room, close by, and releasing a little Pheromone was enough to make Xu Ziyan much more comfortable. He then completely put his mind at ease.

When they were together, they certainly weren’t just sitting around.

Xu Ziyan made the most of the opportunity, pulling out his laptop and directly asking Xie Wei for advice on points to note during 1v1s and specific terrain on various maps.

Xie Wei was also happy to help, sharing everything he knew. At the same time, he noticed that Xu Ziyan’s Medic playstyle was completely different from the Ranked Match where they first met. A strange feeling flashed through his mind, but it was fleeting and he didn’t dwell on it.

After all, Xu Ziyan had said before that he was his fan.

Xie Wei had seen more fanatical behavior than this, so he simply smiled and let it go.

Half a month passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, it was the day of the Rookie Cup tournament.

Despite all the training and mental preparation, Xu Ziyan still felt inevitably nervous as the competition approached.

Since it was an individual competition, only he and the Coach were traveling. The afternoon sun shone warmly, and the wind rustled through the leaves.

Xu Ziyan stood downstairs with his backpack containing his peripherals, waiting for the driver to bring the team van. He lowered his eyes and casually scrolled through his phone, though he was so nervous he couldn’t actually focus on anything.

Suddenly, someone gently patted his shoulder from behind.

The action was completely unexpected, but Xu Ziyan wasn’t startled. That was because he smelled the incredibly familiar scent of lemon and mint that had surrounded him every day for the past half-month.

He put away his phone and turned around. “Captain Xie.”

Xie Wei smiled and said, “A little nervous, are we?”

    Xu Ziyan nodded obediently.

Xie Wei teased, “Who was it last night who confidently told me they wouldn’t be nervous and would definitely perform exceptionally well?”

After speaking, he patted the soft crown of the young man’s head and comforted him, “Alright, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and don’t worry about getting first or second place. Just relax. Your professional career has just begun; you’ll have plenty of competitions in the future.”

Listening to Xie Wei’s words, Xu Ziyan was surprised to find that his previously anxious heart actually began to calm down slowly.

He had to admit, Xie Wei was truly cold when he kept his distance, but when he wanted to be gentle with someone, he was genuinely meticulous, noticing and soothing even the slightest emotional fluctuation.

Xu Ziyan had planned to slowly regain his senses over the past half-month, learning to restore his mindset to how it used to be.

But the result was that under Xie Wei’s tenderness, he not only failed to pull away but fell deeper and deeper. Now, turning back was almost impossible.

    It didn’t really matter.

It was unrequited love either way, and since he couldn’t have him regardless, whether the symptoms were mild or severe was irrelevant.

Xu Ziyan smiled. “Okay, I will do my best.”

Xie Wei said nothing more, just lightly squeezed his shoulder and said, “Go for it.”

The current Rookie Cup was held at the local sports center in A City, not far from the TWG base. It was a quick fifteen-minute drive.

The competition time was 4 PM, and it was only 2:30 PM now. However, with styling and various pre-match preparations and procedure confirmations, the time would pass quickly.

The team van stopped in the underground garage, and Lu Donglou led Xu Ziyan through the staff-only entrance. It was still early. Besides staff and players, there were only a few scattered spectators in the sports center, but in another hour and a half, all the empty seats would be filled with people.

As Xu Ziyan walked, he noticed that many of the people passing by were well-known streamers, solo queue legends, and several popular retired players.

Seeing his confusion, Lu Donglou explained in a low voice, “After the official competition ends, there will be an exhibition match. They are invited guests.”

    Xu Ziyan nodded.

While he was looking at others, others were also looking at him, secretly guessing the identity of this unfamiliar young man.

Xu Ziyan was good-looking, which was already eye-catching, and he was wearing the TWG team uniform, so attracting attention was normal.

However, no matter how much they discussed it, no one could figure out which ID from the Ladder Ranking had recently joined TWG, and there had been no news about it.

    So they gave up.

Once in the team lounge, Lu Donglou checked his phone and immediately chuckled.

He looked at Xu Ziyan. “Just walking around for a bit, everyone is asking who you are, what position you play, and when you joined the team. Ice, you’re getting a lot of attention.”

Then, he mused, “The new season is about to start. We should put your official announcement on the agenda.”

The official announcement, as the name suggests, means the team’s official accounts announcing new player additions or old player departures on various social media platforms.

Xu Ziyan said, “I’ll follow the arrangements.”

Lu Donglou knew he didn’t use Weibo and smiled. “You’re quite easygoing.”

Soon after, a makeup artist came to give Xu Ziyan a simple look. Then, the floor manager briefly explained the competition procedures: where to enter, where to exit, where to go for interviews, and so on. Before long, it was almost 4 PM.

The competition was about to begin. Lu Donglou stood up and firmly patted Xu Ziyan’s back. “Don’t worry about the ranking. Do your best and try to let more people know your ID!”

    Xu Ziyan nodded vigorously. “Okay!”

Guided by the staff, Xu Ziyan sat down at the table corresponding to his number, connected his peripherals, and performed a simple calibration, just as Xie Wei had taught him before.

Soon, the referee’s voice introducing the rules came through the headset. After the rules were introduced and the preparation time ended, the competition officially began.

The random map selection wheel began to spin rapidly. Xu Ziyan unconsciously tightened his grip on the mouse.

    Soon, the wheel stopped.

The map for this round was Gasvinia, a prosperous city located near the sea, built upon green land.

The map was complex, with many tall buildings, suitable for Snipers and guerrilla warfare. However, a portion of it was completely open ground, including a vast beach, with hardly any places to hide.

As a Medic, Xu Ziyan would have to rely on luck to survive.

He selected his equipment, let out a soft breath, briefly stretched his finger joints, and clicked to enter the map.

Outside the A City Sports Center.

Even from a distance, it didn’t stop the people outside from hearing the thunderous screams and cheers from inside. Inside the black team van, Qu Qingyue opened the live stream and glanced at it. “Hmm, the timing is perfect. The match has just started. Let me see where our little Medic landed.”

Shen Xiao, in the back seat, stretched, almost lying on Bai Chen next to him in a completely unseated posture. Hearing the question, he asked, “Which map?”

    “Gasvinia.”

“Whoa.” Shen Xiao whistled and laughed. “Such a complicated map? Looks like someone’s going to suffer.”

Qu Qingyue hummed, closed her phone, and said strangely, “I don’t know what the Head Coach is thinking, dragging our A-Team here to watch the Rookie Cup. This is unprecedented.”

She turned her head. “Captain, do you know what’s going on?”

Xie Wei was currently watching the competition live stream with a single earbud in. Hearing her, he replied, “There’s a streamer playing in the exhibition match later. He’s young, plays Assault, and is a good prospect. Coach Yu wants to recruit him for the team.”

Shen Xiao raised an eyebrow. “The TWG Head Coach personally showing up to invite someone to the team? Holy crap, is the guy some once-in-a-century genius? That’s amazing.”

Qu Qingyue rolled her eyes at him. “Hey, hey, you play Assault too. You should feel a sense of crisis. Geniuses are coming one after another, you know.”

Shen Xiao grinned. “Don’t worry about your Brother Shen. I’ve beaten at least fifty, if not a hundred, geniuses over the years. I’ll beat any who come.”

Qu Qingyue gave him a thumbs-up.

Soon, Yu Guangzhou returned to the van, and the vehicle drove into the underground garage. The A-Team members put on their hats and masks, entering strictly through the staff channel, and found the empty VIP seats in the spectator area.

The view here was excellent, the commentators were passionate, and the big screen happened to switch to the TWG-Ice perspective.

The screen showed a corridor in a tall building. The Medic, holding a healing gun, skillfully dodged sideways into a room, narrowly avoiding a barrage of bullets fired by the Assault Player behind him.

Timing the reload gap perfectly, the Medic leaned out his upper body. The healing gun’s bullet accurately struck the Assault Player’s forehead. A headshot damage indicator flashed, instantly dropping the Assault Player’s health to a sliver.

With just a tiny bit of health left, anyone would be tempted, but the Medic on the screen held back. He wasn’t greedy and retreated back into the room.

Seeing this, the commentator outside the screen couldn’t help but joke, “Ice’s playstyle is still quite cautious.”

Another commentator nodded in agreement. “Indeed, and we must admit that this playstyle is also very effective. Ice currently has two kills and is ranked high overall. For a Medic with limited offensive means, this is already a remarkable achievement.”

The screen perspective switched again, and the two commentators’ topic shifted accordingly.

Below the stage, Xie Wei inexplicably let out a sigh of relief, then chuckled.

He hadn’t told Xu Ziyan he would be here today, mainly because he was afraid it would make him nervous.

Now that Xu Ziyan seemed to be in good condition, Xie Wei felt much more at ease.

Just then, he suddenly heard a not-too-quiet discussion from the back seat.

“Hey, did you know? I heard this Ice is an Omega!”
