    Chapter 24

“Why are you here?” Xie Wei and Xu Ziyan walked into the emergency stairwell together. This spot was sufficiently hidden, and hardly anyone came here. He looked down slightly at the young man in front of him, his tone unconsciously softening. “The second team’s matches are starting soon, aren’t they? You should be training, not running over here.”

Xu Ziyan asked, “Captain, have you had dinner yet?”

Xie Wei had been busy all day and truly hadn’t found time to eat. Hearing this, he thought Xu Ziyan had come to treat him to a consolation meal because of his team’s loss. He smiled helplessly. “Not yet, and I don’t plan to. I have training later.”

Xu Ziyan let out an “Oh” as if he had expected this. Like a magician, he pulled a carton of yogurt and a pork floss bun from his pocket. “I just bought these from the bakery downstairs. Don’t you have a sensitive stomach? You should at least eat a little.”

Xie Wei was stunned, a surge of warmth filling his heart, and the smile on his lips deepened. He didn’t refuse. “Thank you.”

Xu Ziyan handed the bun and yogurt to him, afraid of delaying his training. “You should hurry back to the training room. I’m heading back too.”

With that, he waved his hand and turned to leave decisively, appearing truly just a regular teammate concerned about his captain’s health, with no other intentions.

Xie Wei watched from his spot until Xu Ziyan’s figure completely vanished around the stairwell corner before moving toward the training room.

The A-Team training room was quiet. Having just lost a match, the atmosphere was somewhat subdued. Yu Guangzhou was lecturing the players one by one. Seeing Xie Wei walk in and noticing the items in his hand, he said nothing.

Shen Xiao, who had been thoroughly scolded for failing to protect Qu Qingyue during the match, was now listlessly practicing at the shooting range. Seeing Xie Wei return from his outing with food, he guessed that the captain wouldn’t likely go downstairs just to buy these things, and the fire of gossip ignited in his heart.

He subtly sent Xie Wei a message on Line.

    Seamy: Confess honestly.

    Xie Wei: ?

Seamy: Which little cutie sent the bun?

Seamy: Is Captain Xie’s spring finally arriving?

Xie Wei scoffed, intending to reply, “What nonsense are you talking about?” But just before sending it, his finger paused for some reason, and he deleted the entire message.

    Xie Wei: Look behind you.

Shen Xiao received the message, a big question mark popping up in his mind. He turned as instructed, meeting Yu Guangzhou’s gaze directly.

Yu Guangzhou glanced at his computer screen, then at the phone in his hand. “It seems God Xiao’s training is going very smoothly.”

Shen Xiao immediately wilted, put down his phone, exited the shooting range, and started a Ranked Match.

With the gossiper out of the way, Xie Wei unwrapped the bun. Just as he took a bite, he felt a weight on his shoulder. It was Yu Guangzhou, who had walked past and patted him.

He turned around, only to see Yu Guangzhou looking knowing. The coach nodded slightly and subtly gave him a thumbs-up gesture of support.

    Xie Wei: …

Were there this many gossips on their team?

Too lazy to explain, he quickly finished the food and started his Ranked Match.

A few days later, the second team’s drawing ceremony was about to begin.

Xu Ziyan sat in the audience, watching Yuan Shaofeng, the second team captain, go up to draw the lot. Bai Ke, sitting next to him, sighed and said gloomily, “Don’t hold out any hope for a good draw. This guy is notoriously unlucky with draws. Just be prepared to play against the strongest team.”

Xu Ziyan was initially skeptical, wondering if it could really be that mystical.

The result was: it really was that mystical.

Yuan Shaofeng rubbed his hands together and immediately drew the previous champion, FTK, from the box.

When the host announced the result, thunderous applause erupted spontaneously from the audience. Xu Ziyan heard people from other teams behind him applauding and praising, “Yuan is still so divine. I almost want to enshrine his picture.”

A teammate, while applauding, disapproved, “Don’t. I’m afraid you’ll catch his bad luck.”

    Xu Ziyan: …

Clearly, this was already a classic recurring event.

Yuan Shaofeng returned dejectedly amidst the applause. “Sigh.”

Bai Ke said, “It’s fine. The Coach and Data Analyst prepared for a match against FTK in advance. You’ve just fulfilled everyone’s expectations.”

Yuan Shaofeng was not comforted and looked even sadder.

    Xu Ziyan patted his shoulder.

Yuan Shaofeng turned, looking at him expectantly.

Xu Ziyan gave him a thumbs-up and said, “Nice.”

    Yuan Shaofeng: “…”

The remaining teams had also drawn their lots, the match schedule was set, and the competition was about to officially begin.

The first match was KW Second Team versus CTG, and the second match was TWG Second Team versus FTK Second Team.

Even so, it was only two days away.

On the way back, Bai Ke poked Xu Ziyan’s shoulder. “Ice, are you free tonight? Come try a new strategy with me.”

    Xu Ziyan readily agreed.

Two days later, the entire second team woke up early to catch a flight to FTK’s home stadium for the match. Everyone was yawning, but Xu Ziyan, nervous about the upcoming competition, wasn’t sleepy at all.

After landing, they first dropped off their luggage at the hotel. When it was time, they headed to the competition venue to prepare. Xu Ziyan hadn’t been tired on the plane, but once at the hotel, he felt a bit dizzy and fell asleep in a daze.

When he woke up, it was already time to leave.

Since it was the Secondary League, not many people paid attention, but TWG and FTK’s A-Teams were both very popular, so the number of spectators who came to watch was still quite considerable. The venue was bustling with people.

The pre-match procedures were not much different from when Xu Ziyan participated in the Rookie Cup, except that back then he was fighting alone, and this time, he had teammates beside him.

    The match officially began.

The random map for this round was Rynia Harbor.

This map was not a scenic one. In the pitch-black night, sea winds blew, massive shipping containers were neatly lined up, towering cranes stood next to unfinished buildings, streetlights were dim, and the brightly lit city across the coast could be seen in the distance.

This map had poor visibility, many high places, and few hiding spots, making it a classic sniper’s paradise.

    Bai Ke happily whistled.

The game mode was AB point defense. Xu Ziyan’s team was the attacking side. The rules were simple: attack Point A within the time limit, and after successfully capturing it, proceed to attack Point B. Success was achieved if Point B was taken before the countdown ended.

Entering the game, Bai Ke said, “Ice, want to try the new strategy?”

Xu Ziyan chuckled. “Sure, let’s get dirty.”

Yuan Shaofeng and Meng Cang had already seen their strategy in previous scrims and had no objections, only quietly muttering, “They’re getting more and more insidious,” which earned them a glare.

The preparation time ended, and on the large screen in the venue, the two teams began moving toward Point A.

Commentator D said, “Alright, the game has officially begun. Blue team FTK, red team TWG. Both are strong teams, so this strong-versus-strong matchup makes the game even more exciting.”

Commentator C said, “Indeed. FTK was last year’s Secondary League champion, and TWG has brought in fresh blood this year, the Medic, Ice, who recently won the Rookie Cup.”

Commentator D said, “Both sides have players who are currently on a hot streak. Okay, the director is showing us the screen. Let’s look at the players’ weapon choices.”

Commentator C said, “Most are conventional, but on the TWG side, the Sniper KK brought two sniper rifles, and the Medic Ice brought a taser and healing vials. This combination is quite rare.”

Commentator D said, “TWG might be bringing out a new strategy.”

Unexpectedly, this proved prophetic. Two minutes later, Xu Ziyan silently crept up the crane where the enemy sniper was located.

Outside the screen, Commentator C said in disbelief, “Uh, is Ice trying to, flank the backline? But the Medic’s damage isn’t enough…”

FTK’s sniper reacted quickly, switching weapons the moment he heard approaching footsteps. Xu Ziyan had no intention of engaging in a prolonged fight and immediately pulled out the taser.

The instant the sniper was stunned, a gunshot rang out from a distance, and Bai Ke secured the headshot kill.

After the kill, Xu Ziyan didn’t rush to leave. Utilizing the advantage of the high ground, he confirmed the location of the enemy Medic before pulling out a healing vial and tossing it down, healing Yuan Shaofeng and Meng Cang, who were currently entangled with the enemy Assault Players below.

The health of the two Assault Players rose from precarious levels to something manageable.

Outside the screen, the two commentators were already stunned by the situation. Commentator C said, “…Hmm, no wonder Ice chose to carry healing vials. If this is the chosen method of healing, the vials are indeed the optimal choice.”

After throwing the healing vial, Xu Ziyan saw that the two Assault Players wouldn’t die anytime soon, so he went to find the enemy Medic.

In less than a minute, he and Bai Ke repeated their tactic, successfully eliminating the Medic.

During this time, Yuan Shaofeng and Meng Cang struggled to hold off the enemy Assault Players, occasionally receiving splash healing from the vials, barely surviving.

Now that the opposing Medic had been taken out, and with no support on their side, Yuan Shaofeng, who occasionally received some healing, successfully secured the kill on the enemy Assault Player.

TWG successfully captured Point A. Commentator D laughed, “Because Rynia Harbor is a sniper’s paradise, almost every team prioritizes taking out the sniper at the start. Although TWG’s approach this round is similar, well, how should I put it…”

Commentator C said, “However, having two Assault Players tie up the enemy Assault Players while the Medic flanks to take out the backline is the first time we’ve seen this strategy.”

Commentator D said, “But this strategy has a significant advantage: FTK’s Assault Players are tied up, and the enemy sniper is being managed by Ice’s flank, so TWG’s KK has had a very comfortable output environment. Coupled with the fact that this map heavily favors snipers, it’s truly a perfect storm for KK.”

Commentator C looked at the pitiful amount of healing received by TWG’s two Assault Players and sympathized, “It’s just a bit rough on the Assault Players.”

The attack on Point B began. Yuan Shaofeng and Meng Cang, who had desperately survived the first half, were about to righteously refuse Xu Ziyan and Bai Ke’s dirty strategy when they were interrupted by two syringes shoved into their hands by Xu Ziyan.

“One each,” Xu Ziyan said. “Good luck. Be self-reliant.”

Yuan Shaofeng was about to say something when he heard Bai Ke coolly say, “What’s wrong? Are you hoping I’ll be the one to take the pressure?”

Yuan Shaofeng obediently took the syringe and shut up.
