    Chapter 44

As the door opened, Xu Ziyan looked over and saw four figures leisurely walking in. The front two were a middle-aged couple dressed in gold and silver, and behind them were two young men. Although it wasn’t obvious, Xu Ziyan could tell at a glance that they were Alphas.

The middle-aged couple was a typical male Alpha and female Omega pairing.

Xie Wei stepped forward, a polite yet distant smile on his face. “Cousin Aunt, Cousin Uncle, long time no see. I heard Cousin Uncle was hospitalized with an illness last time. Is your health better now?”

Xie Linchun narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing her eldest nephew. After a year, the already outstanding man had become even more striking. From his appearance and physique to his demeanor and etiquette, he surpassed both of her sons standing behind her.

And he was a Top-Tier Alpha.

Speaking of this, Xie Linchun ground her teeth in frustration. She had never liked her cousin-in-law. Not only was she an Alpha, but she was also exceptionally capable. Since she arrived, the entire Xie family business had been revitalized, even advancing further.

In her opinion, once married, whether Alpha or Beta, one should settle down and focus on supporting their husband and raising children at home. Not like Xie Wei’s mother, who was successful in both business and romance, making Xie Linchun feel utterly useless in comparison.

Consequently, Xie Linchun found everything about her cousin-in-law annoying, and their interactions were often fraught with subtle antagonism.

Later, she gave birth to two sons, both Alphas, which finally allowed Xie Linchun to feel superior to Xie Wei’s mother for a time. After all, unlike Omegas, the probability of an Alpha giving birth was extremely low.

But then, Xie Wei’s mother also became pregnant and gave birth to a Top-Tier Alpha.

Needless to say, since Xie Wei’s birth, Xie Linchun had never been able to hold her head high in front of Xie Wei’s mother again.

If she could, she would never step foot inside the Xie family home again, but she had no choice. The current head of the Xie family was Xie Wei’s father, and her husband was a live-in son-in-law. The annual visits and New Year’s greetings were unavoidable social obligations.

Xie Linchun responded flatly, “I’ve been well for a long time.”

She then led her husband and two sons toward the living room, familiar with the layout.

She was pondering what lines to use to feign cordiality with Xie Wei’s mother when she looked up and saw that, besides Xie Wei’s mother, who wore a half-smile, there was an Omega she had never seen before sitting on the expensive leather sofa in the Xie family living room!

Over the years, despite Xie Wei’s excellence, he had never dated anyone, not even casually. His personal life was spotless, which was unlike a normal Alpha.

Xie Linchun often used this fact to comfort herself, thinking he might have some unspeakable difficulty.

But at this moment, looking at the young and handsome Omega youth on the sofa, she was somewhat dumbfounded.

“Oh, let me introduce you,” Xie Wei’s mother said with a composed smile. “This is the person Xiao Wei brought back. His name is Xu Ziyan.”

Xu Ziyan felt the tense atmosphere in the air. Taking his cue, he tentatively stood up. “Hello, Cousin Aunt. Hello, Cousin Uncle.”

Xie Linchun barely maintained the smile on her face. “…Hello.”

Her expression, however, had turned as dark as charcoal.

Xu Ziyan sat back down on the sofa, finally understanding why Xie Wei had instructed him earlier to return to his room after dinner.

He really wanted to leave now!

Beside them, Xie Wei began discussing company matters with his Cousin Uncle and two cousins, while Xie Wei’s mother started talking with Xie Linchun.

Xu Ziyan took out his phone to idly pass the time. Suddenly, he keenly sensed a fervent gaze fixed on him. He initially thought it was Xie Wei, but then realized it was unlikely, so he looked up curiously.

He found that the person watching him was none other than the younger of Xie Linchun’s two Alpha sons.

When discovered, the young man didn’t seem embarrassed and even nodded and smiled.

Xu Ziyan felt confused but didn’t dwell on it. He nodded back and returned his attention to his phone.

Not long after, Xie Wei’s father rushed back from the company. Compared to Xie Wei’s mother’s enthusiasm, he clearly had little interest in probing his son’s romantic life, asking only a few perfunctory questions before stopping.

It was also dinner time, so the group moved to the dining room.

Although Xu Ziyan received many polite, albeit sometimes insincere, courtesies due to his connection with Xie Wei, he was still a guest and didn’t say much during the meal.

Xie Wei, on the other hand, was questioned about everything: How were the team’s results? How was the management? How much profit was made? How much did assets increase this year? Which major deals were closed?

Then the conversation quickly shifted to various forms of boasting.

Xie Wei wasn’t as taciturn as Bai Chen on the team, but he wasn’t overly talkative either. Yet, facing the barrage of conversational tactics, he handled the socializing effortlessly, silently deflecting many questions and drinks aimed at Xu Ziyan.

Xu Ziyan genuinely wasn’t good at conversation and couldn’t engage in the subtle maneuvering and mind games with a group of people whose words were mostly half-truths. This made him admire Xie Wei even more.

The dishes on the table were dazzling and tasted excellent. Unfortunately, in such an atmosphere, Xu Ziyan couldn’t eat much. After filling his stomach slightly, he put down his chopsticks.

Seeing Xie Wei deep in conversation with others, he didn’t speak up about leaving early. Besides, that behavior would be impolite and might leave a bad impression. Xu Ziyan only thought about it; he didn’t actually intend to do it.

Unexpectedly, one moment Xie Wei was talking to his Cousin Uncle about the newly signed entertainment company, and the next, he turned back, smiling as he squeezed Xu Ziyan’s wrist. “Are you finished eating?”

Xu Ziyan widened his eyes slightly, surprised that Xie Wei could pay attention to his every move even while busy. “…Yes.”

“Then go up to my room and rest first,” Xie Wei’s smile was much more genuine and gentle now than when he was socializing. “It’s the one on the far left upstairs.”

“How thoughtful,” Xie Linchun raised an eyebrow, her smiling tone sounding somewhat sarcastic. “You haven’t been dating for long, have you?”

Xie Wei pulled Xu Ziyan closer, smiled, and avoided the question, only saying, “He hasn’t rested well these past few days, and he’s tired now. Let him go up and sleep for a bit.”

Xie Linchun gave a light hmph and said no more.

Xu Ziyan, under the gaze of the entire table, practically fled the dining room.

Walking up the stairs, the noisy conversation was now a good distance away. He finally let out a sigh of relief, feeling much more relaxed.

His phone vibrated. He took it out and saw a message from Xie Wei.

Xie Wei: The computer is in the inner study. Password: xxxxx. Feel free to play.

After finding Xie Wei’s room and pushing the door open, Xu Ziyan finally understood what “inner room” meant.

The first thing he saw upon entering was a spacious and bright living room, furnished with a sofa, coffee table, and all kinds of furniture. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, he could see the lush pine trees in the courtyard outside.

Past the entrance, there was a kitchen, a bathroom, two washrooms, a bedroom, a study, and a utility room. It was essentially a self-contained apartment.

…This room was truly quite large.

Xu Ziyan curiously walked around the room, looked at all the photos on the cabinets, and then sat down on the sofa to continue playing on his phone.

He felt inclined to be polite, but scrolling through his phone alone was genuinely too boring. After a while, he got up and went to the study.

Following the password in the message, Xu Ziyan turned on the computer. While waiting for the Resist client to update, he lightly tapped the keyboard in front of him twice.

He was used to the softer Red switches, but Xie Wei preferred the tactile Black switches, which required more force to press, made a louder sound, and offered a powerful feel.

Next to the computer screen was a light-colored photo frame containing a fluffy, plump white kitten… Was it Xie Wei’s cat?

Xu Ziyan reached out a finger and gently poked the little cat’s pink nose.

Before long, the game finished updating. Perhaps due to the game settings, it automatically logged into Xie Wei’s account upon opening the interface.

The ID Shining glowed with a pale golden light in the personal information section on the top left—a symbol of the real-time Ladder Ranking number one.

Xu Ziyan looked at the familiar game interface and suddenly felt flustered.

What he should do now was politely log out.

But looking at the glittering ID, Xu Ziyan couldn’t take his eyes off it. As if possessed, he gripped the mouse and slowly moved it toward the “History” button.

This was one of Resist’s unique features: it saved all game records and chat logs for five years, automatically compiling data such as: In XX year, you totaled xxx critical hits, with a critical hit rate of xx percent. In XX year, your most frequent Duo Queue partner was xxxx, totaling xxx hours of playtime.

This data was considered personal privacy, so only the account owner could view it, and it also served as a way for veteran players to reminisce.

Just as Xu Ziyan was about to click it, the friends list suddenly chimed with a chat notification.

    Seamy: ???

Seamy: Captain, why are you online so early?

Xu Ziyan snapped back to reality. The thought that he had almost secretly checked Xie Wei’s chat and game records, trying to investigate Xie Wei’s past and present social interactions, filled him with shame. He quickly and clumsily logged out of the account.

He logged back into his own account and clicked the queue button, rubbing his temples with his arm.

It was dinner time, and his score was high, so he couldn’t find a match right away. Xu Ziyan was about to look for something else to pass the time when he heard two more chimes. A chat notification popped up in the friends list.

    It was Shen Xiao again.

Seamy: Hey—what a coincidence. The Captain logged on briefly just now. I messaged him, but he didn’t reply, and then he logged off for some reason. Right after, you logged on.

Xu Ziyan’s heart tightened: Did Shen Xiao figure something out?

Before that thought could fully form, he saw Shen Xiao continue.

Seamy: This proves it: you and the Captain are truly a match made in heaven. Even your login and logout times are in sync.

Seamy: So, Duo Queue? I can’t stand those random Medics anymore.

Normally, Xu Ziyan found Shen Xiao’s cluelessness quite annoying, but at this moment, he found his silly enthusiasm particularly endearing, and his attitude toward him softened.

    Ice: Sure, invite me.
