    Chapter Index

After finishing the required streaming time, Bai Ke and Bai Chen had another meal at the Xie family home before preparing to leave.

Before departing, Bai Ke found an opportunity and gave Xu Ziyan a look. Xu Ziyan instinctively understood and followed him to the second-floor terrace.

The sun shone brightly outside the terrace. Bai Ke squinted, closed the glass door securely, and then spoke, “After the version announcement came out, several teams started making roster changes. Ice, you must have received quite a few transfer invitations from various teams these past few days.”

Xu Ziyan paused, not hiding anything. “Yes, almost all the teams that made the playoffs have approached me.” He then frowned. “Is TWG having personnel changes?”

He thought back, but no one had shown the slightest hint of it.

Bai Ke smiled, shaking his head. “Don’t worry, there’s no news of that yet. But that’s only temporary. TWG hasn’t changed its roster in years, but no team can survive without fresh blood. You need to be prepared.”

Xu Ziyan didn’t quite grasp it. “Prepared?”

Bai Ke knew he hadn’t considered this. He sighed, turned around, and met Xu Ziyan’s gaze. “Have you ever thought about what TWG would be like if Xie Wei retired?”

    Xie Wei?

    Retired?

    Xu Ziyan froze.

He had never considered this, and not just him—probably all TWG fans hadn’t thought about TWG without Xie Wei. After all the ups and downs over the years, Xie Wei, as a figure who constantly dominated the entire league and the China Server Ladder Ranking, had long become synonymous with TWG. Countless people thought of Xie Wei when TWG was mentioned, and TWG when Xie Wei was mentioned; the two were inseparable.

However, thinking carefully, several years had passed, and Xie Wei was no longer the spirited rookie player he once was. When Xu Ziyan first knew him, Xie Wei was already in his early twenties. Several years later, Xie Wei was now nearly twenty-five.

Twenty-five, in any other industry, was still just a young man with little experience.

But the esports industry was cruel and fleeting, like fireworks—no matter how brilliant, they eventually faded. Twenty-four or twenty-five years old was already approaching the end of a professional career.

Xu Ziyan pursed his lips and looked down. “Xie Wei… his condition is still very good.”

“I know that,” Bai Ke, who had been suppressed in the second team by Xie Wei for years, was probably the clearest about Xie Wei’s condition. “But Ice, you are only nineteen.”

Nineteen years old was the peak of a professional ascent, but Xie Wei was uncontrollably starting his decline.

No matter how formidable Xie Wei was, the day he retired would eventually come. And by then, Xu Ziyan would certainly still be on the team.

    He had to plan ahead.

    Xu Ziyan fell silent.

Xie Wei’s peak was at twenty-two, when he fought in Northern Europe. In the World Finals, Xie Wei’s heavy sniper landed headshots every time, and TWG crushed their opponent three to zero, setting the record for the shortest World Finals match duration.

The young man was full of vigor, holding the trophy, with spotlights from all over the world focused on him. Golden confetti rained down, announcing his coronation as king.

The photo on Xu Ziyan’s phone screen saver was taken at that moment.

A year later, Xie Wei won another world championship, but anyone with a keen eye could see that his playstyle was slowly changing. It shifted from reckless abandon to gradual restraint and maneuvering.

He was using his own methods to maintain his condition and strength as much as possible, but this effort had limits.

“I’m not here to lobby for YNG,” Bai Ke sighed. “It’s not just him; Shen Xiao is twenty-three this year, and my brother is twenty-four. Even if there are no changes recently, there will be later. At least while you’re still on the team… you need to be prepared.”

Xu Ziyan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He closed his eyes and said, “I know.”

Bai Ke didn’t say these things to panic him. He was mainly worried that his friend, having just entered the industry and being completely smitten with Xie Wei, hadn’t made any plans for the future, so he wanted to give him a reminder.

He then comforted him, “Actually, these are all uncertain things. When that day truly comes, then…”

Xu Ziyan said calmly, “If that day truly comes, and Xie Wei genuinely leaves TWG, then I only have one thing to do.”

“Guard all the glory he left behind, and lead TWG to greater heights.”

Outside the terrace, Xie Wei, who was about to knock on the door, paused, withdrew his hand, and a smile curved his lips.

He turned around and quietly left.

Bai Chen saw him coming downstairs and raised an eyebrow. “Where is he? Couldn’t find him?”

Xie Wei said, “Two juniors talking. It wouldn’t be right for me to eavesdrop.”

Bai Chen twitched his lips and changed the subject. “I heard the Coach team is opening another Youth Training Camp after the New Year. The frequency is much higher than before.”

Xie Wei replied, “Yes, preparing for both possibilities.”

Bai Chen asked, “Looking for someone to replace you?”

Xie Wei scoffed. “Don’t worry, I will definitely send you off first before I retire in peace.”

Bai Chen gave a faint smile.

They were both “high-aged” players, and they were well aware of their declining condition and eventual retirement.

Bai Ke was perceptive, thinking deeply and extensively, so Xie Wei wasn’t surprised that he would talk about this with Xu Ziyan.

He just hadn’t expected Xu Ziyan’s attitude to be so resolute.

    No hesitation, no confusion.

Xie Wei unconsciously licked his canine teeth.

Even if Xu Ziyan wasn’t his Omega, and they didn’t have this relationship, purely based on those words, Xie Wei felt he should play for two more years, stabilize the new TWG, and then retire without worry.

He thought for a moment and said to Bai Chen, “Although I won’t adopt it, I’ll ask anyway: do you have any substitute candidates in mind?”

“…” Bai Chen said, “Why not just promote someone from the second team?”

    The second team.

Xie Wei considered it. “Yuan? He’s alright, but I watched a few Secondary League matches. That kid from KW’s second team is also good. I think his name was Ovil?”

Bai Chen realized that if they kept talking, Xie Wei might try to send him off within the next two days, not two years, so he chuckled and ignored him.

Just then, Bai Ke and Xu Ziyan came down from upstairs. The two said quick goodbyes and left the Xie family home together.

While they were there, the large mansion felt fine, but once they left, it seemed much emptier.

Xu Ziyan’s mind was still revolving around what Bai Ke had said.

Roster changes, team data, scrims, and matches—just thinking about it all felt complicated and headache-inducing.

But Xie Wei had to think about all this every day, plus deal with a pile of club affairs. He was also a star player, so he had to make time each month to stream and appease fans.

When Xie Wei took over TWG, he must have been a year younger than Xu Ziyan was now.

It was hard to imagine how Xie Wei managed to carry a club through such turbulent times.

Xu Ziyan was lost in thought when he suddenly felt his body lift. He snapped back to reality with a gasp, his arms instinctively wrapping around Xie Wei’s shoulders in panic.

The man’s muffled laughter reached his ears.

“Don’t overthink it,” Xie Wei said, holding him bridal style and leaning down to kiss him. “I’m here.”

Xu Ziyan hummed, not wanting Xie Wei to sense his unease, and smiled. “Mhm.”

He then realized Xie Wei had no intention of putting him down, but was carrying him upstairs. He asked, confused and curious, “Captain, put me down… Where are you taking me?”

Xie Wei said, “It’s just the two of us at home right now.”

If you didn’t count Uncle Yan and the other servants, that was true. Xu Ziyan said, “Mhm.”

Xie Wei continued, “We’ve confessed our feelings and are in a relationship.”

The door to the room was right in front of them, and Xu Ziyan already felt something was wrong. “…Right.”

Xie Wei stated matter-of-factly, “Then isn’t it only natural for me to take you to my bedroom?”

    Xu Ziyan was stunned.

He belatedly felt the changes in the man’s body, and his face slowly turned red.

Wait… was Xie Wei like this before?

Xie Wei’s parents were busy people, constantly occupied, and because of the incident with Xie Linchun, few people had come to visit these past few days. They only had a lively dinner together on New Year’s Day.

Xie Mother specially prepared a New Year’s gift for Xu Ziyan: a luxury watch worth seven figures. And Xie Father, who had always been silent and seemed less concerned about these matters, also gave Xu Ziyan a large red envelope.

Xu Ziyan had never received such expensive gifts and was momentarily flustered. He instinctively looked at Xie Wei, only to see the Alpha smiling and watching the show, with no intention of helping him out.

After the previous events, Xie Mother could tell her son was serious. She also liked this “daughter-in-law,” and holding Xu Ziyan’s hand, she smiled, “We’re family now, why be so polite?”

Xu Ziyan awkwardly allowed Xie Mother to put the watch on him, a warm current flowing through his heart.

Since his parents divorced, he had never felt the warmth of family affection. Over the years, he had been pushed back and forth, unable to find a home that would accept him.

Now, far away from his parents, he had found a sense of belonging he had never known.

Xie Wei chuckled. “You’ve taken the ‘name change fee,’ why aren’t you calling them by their new titles?”

Xu Ziyan gasped, stammering, “Th-thank you, Mom. Thank you, Dad…”

After saying the words, his face was completely red, and his head was nearly bowed to the floor.

Xie Mother couldn’t help but laugh at how thin-skinned he was. She stopped teasing him and changed the subject.

After the New Year, the hot spring trip was put on the agenda.

The night before they left, Xu Ziyan stood alone by the floor-to-ceiling window in Xie Wei’s room, looking down at the messages his parents had sent him on his phone.

His father, as usual, only sent a simple “Happy New Year” and a red envelope.

His mother’s message, besides “Happy New Year,” included a few extra lines.

[I heard from Xixi that you’re playing in that esports team?]

[He said he’s a fan of your captain. Could you see if you can get Xixi an autograph?]

[Sigh, Mom knows you resent me, but Xixi is your brother after all, so could you… ?]

    Xixi.

Chen Xi was the child of the man Xu Mother remarried. Xu Ziyan had met him; he was a very cute Omega.

Xu Ziyan gave a wry smile, raised his finger, and typed.

    [Okay.]

Although it was just for appearances, Xu Ziyan’s parents had done their part over the years.

    It was just an autograph.

Xu Ziyan rubbed his phone, absentmindedly wondering how he should ask Xie Wei.

More importantly, Xie Wei had already introduced him to his parents. Should he also introduce Xie Wei to his?

It was just that Xu Father and Xu Mother didn’t seem to care or pay attention to whether he had a partner, so perhaps this whole process was unnecessary.

In the past, whenever he thought of this, Xu Ziyan felt an undeniable emptiness.

But now, he had found a new home, so he no longer cared.

Putting down his phone, he smiled, stood up, and went to pack his luggage for the hot spring trip.
