How To Break Qaq If The Dragon Catches The Wrong Person? Chapter 6
byChapter 6 The Glove
Following behind Kairis and the retinue of Royal Stewards, Mian was multitasking, observing the surrounding scenery while recalling what had just happened in the main hall.
He had arrived in a hurry yesterday, and as soon as he entered the Royal Palace, he was rushed straight to the sleeping quarters, completely missing the chance to properly look at the palace grounds.
Only now did he have a slight opportunity to appreciate it.
But no matter how beautiful the scenery inside the Royal Palace was, he couldn’t spare much attention for it right now.
Thinking this, Mian secretly raised his eyes, glanced at Kairis in what he thought was a discreet manner, and quickly withdrew his gaze.
After he had asked Kairis that question, the Prince had been silent for a moment, then asked him, in a normal tone, when he needed to leave.
Of course, the sooner the better.
But he hadn’t had the chance to say it.
Because just as he was about to answer, a Palace Guard suddenly rushed into the hall with a hurried expression. He was so anxious he didn’t even manage to salute, quickly handing a document to Kairis.
Kairis reached out, took the scroll, opened it, and began skimming the contents.
The Palace Guard stood aside and added a rather abrupt comment: “The person has been captured.”
Kairis finished reading the scroll, placed it back in the Palace Guard’s hand without changing his expression, and then immediately excused himself from the King.
It was as if something very important had suddenly come up.
Mian thought for a moment and followed him.
Which led to the current situation.
It wasn’t long before the group arrived at their destination.
—The Castle Dungeon.
The Dungeon was located in a subterranean area next to the main castle building.
Its entrance was a heavy metal door, guarded on both sides by heavily armored soldiers wielding greatswords.
Perhaps due to its nature, the entire area felt inexplicably gloomy.
The guard forcefully pushed open the barred metal door. The next moment, the damp air unique to underground spaces rushed out, carrying a metallic scent of rust.
Kairis walked in first, followed by the Royal Stewards.
Mian hesitated but followed them inside.
Because Kairis didn’t seem to have any intention of sending him away.
Reaching the deepest part of the Dungeon was not easy; they first had to pass through a long, winding tunnel.
A Palace Guard led the way, and the group walked through in silence.
Even though torches that occasionally crackled were lit on both sides of the tunnel, the temperature didn’t rise much, remaining cold and damp. Several sets of footsteps echoed in the space, and there was no other sound, making it even more silent.
Such an environment easily made one feel uneasy.
Mian involuntarily quickened his pace slightly, moving closer to Kairis.
Kairis noticed his small movement but didn’t react, seemingly giving his silent permission.
Before long, everyone reached their destination.
Before entering the Dungeon proper, they had to pass through an even more secure door. Standing before that door was a young man who looked like he had been waiting for a long time.
He looked a little familiar.
Mian recalled that this seemed to be the person who had been standing next to Kairis at the castle gate yesterday.
However, at the time, he had been focused solely on the excitement of finding the Princess, so even though he thought he had heard this person’s name somewhere, he hadn’t managed to remember it.
That was quite impolite.
Thinking this, Mian felt a strange sense of shame.
The man greeted Kairis, then immediately turned his attention to Mian.
Mian pursed his lips, slightly hesitant about whether to speak first.
“Hello, Little Dragon, we meet again,” the young man said, addressing him first.
His voice was slightly raised, seemingly carrying a hint of interest, as if he was in a good mood, or perhaps that was just his natural demeanor.
He seemed like an easygoing human.
“Hello,” Mian secretly breathed a sigh of relief and politely replied, “My name is Mian.”
“A very lovely name.” Seemingly amused by Mian’s tone, the young man smiled and mimicked him, “My name is Ovi.”
“Mr. Ovi.” Mian didn’t notice anything amiss with Ovi’s tone. He just nodded, then looked at Ovi, hesitated for a moment, and still offered a subtle concern: “Your posture seems a bit off. Are your legs uncomfortable?”
Ovi’s smile froze on his face.
A slight puff of air suddenly sounded nearby, so quiet it felt like an illusion.
Mian keenly turned his head and saw Kairis just lowering his hand from his lips.
The Prince looked at him, his expression still the usual calm.
Kairis’s gaze lingered on him for a moment, then shifted to Ovi.
“This is not the time for idle chatter.”
Ovi seemed to be reminded by him, and also thought of something. His expression slightly straightened, becoming unusually serious.
“Let’s go.” Putting away his joking mood, he signaled the guard beside him to open the door.
As soon as they entered the Dungeon, the cold, sticky air became even more pronounced. The torches that lined the tunnel were replaced by cages holding prisoners, and the light was much dimmer than outside.
However, there weren’t many people locked inside.
The Castle Dungeon usually only temporarily held certain criminals. It was used more for interrogation than punishment, and those with less severe crimes were quickly moved to the prison outside the castle.
The group walked to the deepest part of the Dungeon, and Mian quickly saw the person lying prone inside the cell.
Kairis stopped in front of that cell, looking down at the person crawling on the ground, his eyes filled with coldness.
As he got closer, Mian realized the person inside was covered in wounds, bloodstains everywhere, even soaking through his clothes. He looked wretched and miserable.
Seemingly sensing the movement in front of him, he paused, then quickly raised his head.
The moment he saw Kairis, the man’s eyes lit up. He then dragged his broken body and struggled to crawl to the door.
Once in front of Kairis, his hands tightly gripped the iron bars near the Prince’s feet, as if grasping a life-saving straw. The blood mixed with dirt stained the bars, forcing a layer of sticky, dirty red onto them.
“Your… Your Highness, you are Prince Kairis, aren’t you?” the man asked, full of hope, then began to weep bitterly: “Your Highness, I truly know I was wrong. I deserve to die, truly, I failed them… but I was forced to do it.”
“I know I should pay for them with my life, but I have old parents and children at home, I can’t… Yes, yes, old parents and children!” At this, the man seemed to remember something, his eyes instantly filled with hope, and his voice became extremely urgent: “Give me one more chance, I promise, I will take care of the bereaved families of those people, alright?!”
Mian looked at the scene, instinctively feeling uncomfortable, but seeing the man in that state, he also felt a little pity.
He frowned slightly, withdrew his gaze, and subconsciously looked at Kairis.
The expression on Kairis’s face now was one of coldness Mian had never seen before.
He did not react to anything the man crawling at his feet said, nor did he show any sign of being moved. His gaze was slightly lowered, his eyes devoid of emotion.
It was not like looking at a person, but looking at a… dead object.
Seeing this, the man cried even harder, the blood and tears mixing on his face, making him look increasingly hideous and terrifying: “Please listen to my explanation, things are not as they said…”
“Prince, how do you plan to deal with him?” The Royal Steward beside him seemed accustomed to this situation and didn’t react to it. Seeing Kairis remain silent, he observed the Prince’s expression for a moment and respectfully stepped forward to ask.
Mian didn’t know which word in that sentence struck the person locked inside, but he suddenly became extremely agitated. He scrambled up from the ground and threw himself against the iron bars, letting out a heavy thud.
Mian was startled by this sudden change and instinctively took a step back.
The man’s eyes widened greatly, his eyeballs looking as if they might pop out of their sockets. He gasped for breath, his gaze rapidly darting over everyone present.
It was a sticky, very uncomfortable gaze.
Kairis frowned. One hand rested on his sword, subconsciously ready to draw it, but his peripheral vision caught sight of the person standing beside him, and he relaxed his grip.
“Kill him,” he said flatly.
His tone was icy, without a trace of warmth.
Mian was shocked.
He then subconsciously looked at the person in the cell.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, the man immediately erupted into frantic and incoherent curses. Then, perhaps realizing that he had no chance of survival left, he quickly began to wail loudly.
Several City Guards quickly stepped forward upon receiving the order, kicking the prisoner, who was still trying to squeeze his hands out, back onto the ground.
The scene was chaotic for a moment.
Kairis paid no attention, merely taking off the glove on his hand that had accidentally been stained with a splash of blood.
“Dispose of it,” he instructed the Royal Steward who caught his glove.
His tone was not much different from the “Kill him” he had just uttered.
It was as if sentencing a person to death was as easy as throwing away a glove.
The journey back was still quiet.
But for some reason, Mian no longer stood close to Kairis. Instead, he lagged slightly behind, walking side-by-side with Ovi.
Ovi noticed this and found it quite novel.
Kairis also noticed.
His steps paused almost imperceptibly, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he remained silent.
After leaving the tunnel, fresh air instantly rushed into Mian’s lungs. Smelling the air in the castle, which carried a faint floral scent, Mian felt like a fish that had just been pulled out of the water.
It was early spring, and the sun outside was still bright, a stark contrast to the Dungeon.
Ovi was called away by Kairis at some point, leaving Mian to fall back a few steps alone.
However, he didn’t mind, thinking about what he should do next.
Kairis didn’t seem able to leave with him immediately… so he would have to stay here for a while longer.
What should he do?
Suddenly remembering something, Mian paused his steps.
He recalled that outside the castle, he had promised Miya he would help him find his sister.
Kairis, though walking ahead, quickly noticed his pause, so he stopped too, turning his head to ask, “What’s wrong?”
It was his usual tone, but Mian felt inexplicably nervous.
He pursed his lips, hesitating between asking Kairis directly where the Palace Kitchen was and finding a chance to ask Sasha later. He chose the latter.
“Nothing…”
Before he could finish his sentence, a clear, sweet voice suddenly rang out not far away.
“Brother, why are you here!”
