    Chapter 7 Choice

Mian subconsciously followed the sound and saw that the speaker was a little girl with the same golden hair as Kairis, wearing an extremely exquisite pink dress.

She was standing in a nearby covered walkway, accompanied by several maids.

The little girl was very cute, with fair skin and large eyes. Her beautiful golden hair was braided into a lovely style, and a small crown adorned her head. She was utterly endearing.

However, when Ovi heard her voice, he involuntarily began to look troubled.

After a moment’s thought, he immediately grabbed a Royal Steward and used him as a shield.

Mian, who happened to be standing nearby: “?”

Ovi shook his head heavily at him.

“Loria.” Kairis looked at his sister and said coldly, “Who taught you to make such a ruckus? Should I hire a few more etiquette tutors for you?”

Loria pouted, responding perfunctorily, “I know, I know.”

Then her gaze shifted, and she spotted Mian standing behind Kairis.

She first froze, then her eyes lit up.

“Who is he?” Loria pointed at Mian, her voice slightly rising, as if she had found an interesting new toy.

Before anyone could answer, she speculated on her own: “Mother said you brought back a member of the Dragon Race, Brother. Is it him?”

As she spoke, she and her maids gradually approached, wanting to get a closer look at Mian.

Ovi sensed her intention and cast a look of pity toward Mian.

Mian, however, did not catch his gaze.

His attention was drawn to a little maid accompanying the young girl.

That girl looked about the same age and height as Loria, making her stand out among the other maids who were clearly much older than Loria.

—Most importantly, she looked somewhat like Miya.

The same hair color, eye color, and the same freckles on her face.

He couldn’t help but look at her for a while, wondering if this little girl might be Miya’s sister.

Loria gradually approached and stopped beside Mian, then began to curiously examine him.

It was only then that Mian withdrew his gaze from the girl who resembled Miya’s sister and focused on the young girl before him.

She had just called Kairis ‘Brother,’ so Mian guessed she must be Kairis’s sister.

The little girl was very charming. She looked to be less than ten years old, her head only reaching his upper chest. She was currently looking up at him.

Animal younglings were always cute, and human ones were no exception.

So Mian thought for a moment and gave her a friendly smile.

The little girl looked at him, quiet for a moment, then suddenly reached out and grabbed his hand. She looked at Kairis and said seriously, “Brother, I want him to play with me.”

“Stop being ridiculous.” Kairis frowned slightly and reprimanded her coldly, “Do you have too little homework?”

Loria instinctively shrank her neck, but quickly fought back, “I’m resting today, I don’t have any homework.”

Kairis looked like he was about to say something else, so Loria tightened her grip on Mian’s hand and quickly continued, “And whether he plays with me should be up to him!”

Saying this, she looked up at Mian again and asked, “Do you want to play with me? I have lots of fun toys in my palace.”

“Do you want to come play with me or stay with Brother? You choose one,” Loria said, shaking Mian’s hand, skillfully using her charm.

Mian hadn’t expected things to turn out this way. He hesitated for a moment and cast a pleading look toward Kairis.

But Kairis showed no intention of helping him out, merely standing there, watching, as if genuinely waiting for him to make a choice.

    Mian: “…”

He hesitated for a moment, looked at Kairis, and asked, “What are you going to do next?”

“Go to the Royal Study,” Kairis replied. “Handle State Affairs.”

“How boring,” Loria quickly interjected upon hearing this. “My place is much more fun. Come with me.”

Mian felt a little helpless, somewhere between laughter and tears.

He looked at Loria, then at Kairis, thought for a moment, and finally reached out to pat the little girl’s head, agreeing happily, “Alright.”

Kairis was noncommittal about this. He lowered his eyes and motioned for the others to leave with him.

Ovi, seeing that the crisis was averted, slipped out from behind the innocent Royal Steward and asked Loria with a grin, “Why do you want him to play with you?”

“Because he’s handsome!” Loria held Mian’s hand, stating her reason confidently.

Ovi smiled at this. “So when you asked me to play with you before, was it also because I’m handsome?”

“No.” Loria shook her head. “You’re fun to play with.”

    Ovi: “…”

As they spoke, Kairis had already walked several meters away. Seeing this, Ovi didn’t care about anything else, muttering and cursing as he chased after him.

Loria watched her brother’s retreating back and murmured to herself, “Brother seems a little unhappy…”

“What did you say?” Mian hadn’t heard clearly, thinking she was talking to him, so he bent down slightly.

“Nothing.” Loria raised a smiling face, putting other matters out of her mind. “Let’s go, let’s go. I’ll take you to see my playroom…”

As the group arrived at the entrance of Loria’s bedchamber, they saw Ovi standing by the door with his arms crossed, looking utterly miserable, as if waiting for them.

    Mian: “?”

Loria was perfectly fine with having an extra playmate.

She was currently obsessed with setting up her toy exhibition. Having finally welcomed two “visiting guests,” she excitedly told them to wait outside while she went in first to finalize and inspect the arrangement of her assembled toys.

Thus, for a time, only Mian and Ovi were left at the bedchamber entrance.

“Why didn’t you go with Kairis just now?” After a moment of silence, Ovi suddenly spoke, asking casually, “You didn’t realize, did you? This little ancestor is especially rowdy and difficult to please.”

Mian pursed his lips when he heard this. He was silent for a moment, unsure how to answer.

In fact, he had initially planned to go with Kairis.

The main reason he came here with Loria was because he saw the little maid beside her.

She looked so much like Miya’s sister that he wanted to confirm it.

…Of course, there was also a tiny bit of another reason.

“Let me guess.” Seeing him remain silent, Ovi speculated on his own, “He scared you just now, so you’re afraid?”

    Mian: “…”

He suddenly turned his head and seriously scrutinized Ovi.

Did this person have mind-reading abilities?

    He pondered this gravely.

    Seeing his expression, Ovi laughed.

But soon, he dropped his smile and sighed lightly. “Don’t be fooled by the pitiful appearance of that man in the dungeon just now. He’s not a good person… dying a hundred times wouldn’t be too much.”

He paused, then began to explain slowly.

“Four years ago, he started acting as an informant for… the neighboring country, tricking many of our young people into going there for work.”

“But after a few years, not a single person who went there has returned.”

“Later, Kai… His Highness discovered this and sent specialized personnel to investigate, which is how the truth was uncovered.”

“Almost everyone who went there died.”

Mian listened intently. Hearing this, his emerald green eyes widened slightly.

“Because those people in the neighboring country treated the people sent over as free labor. They suffered inhumane abuse almost every day… not only were they starved and poorly clothed, but they also had to work day and night until they were literally worked to death.”

It wasn’t that those people hadn’t resisted or tried to escape, but no matter how many people gathered or how large the scale, they never succeeded.

The reason was simple… all of this was secretly sanctioned and supported by the Fes Royal Family.

The ones suppressing those people were even the Kingdom’s army.

The investigators Velen sent were also nearly killed there. It was only with the secret assistance of an anonymous Fes noble that they managed to bring back the information.

Kairis spent a lot of effort dealing with this matter recently.

Velen has always been a country that advocates peace, but Kairis will make them pay the price for this incident.

Although they currently have no intention of starting a war, if Fes continues to be so restless, conflict between the two nations will be inevitable.

Thinking of this, Ovi shook his head.

In fact, it wasn’t just the people of Velen who were persecuted; the Dragon Race was too.

Kairis took the opportunity to release some members of the Dragon Race who had suffered the same treatment—it was probably because he had this bargaining chip that he dared to keep the Little Dragon here first.

…Not necessarily. After all, their Prince has always been accustomed to acting on his own will. Ovi always felt that even without this incident, Kairis would have done the same.

However, staying in Velen for the time being might not be a bad thing for this Little Dragon.

The current new King of Fes seems to have a subtle change in attitude toward the Dragon Race; in short, it’s no longer the respectful relationship it once was… If this Little Dragon really went there, there’s no telling what kind of treatment he might receive.

It was probably best not to let him know about the background of this matter—and especially that the neighboring country Ovi spoke of was Fes, where Mian intended to go.

Ovi looked at the newly adult Little Dragon before him, who was ignorant of the world, and thought to himself.

Mian frowned slightly after hearing the story.

He recalled what he had heard about Miya’s father while on the middle-aged man’s Wagon.

They must be talking about the same incident, so that was the whole truth…

After so many years, that father must have long since met with misfortune.

Thinking that the siblings would likely never see their father again, Mian suddenly felt a wave of sadness.

Before he could think any further, the tightly closed palace door in front of him suddenly slid open, and Loria walked out, looking impatient.

“You can come in and visit now! Be careful not to mess anything up, I worked hard to arrange everything!” The little girl’s voice was sweet and crisp, instantly breaking the slightly heavy atmosphere.

The two snapped out of their thoughts and went to meet her.

Many human toys were indeed clever and interesting.

Mian and Ovi spent half the day playing with Loria. Every time Loria shared and introduced something new, Mian would genuinely play along, inadvertently making the Little Princess very happy.

Before long, Ovi, who had been enjoying a leisurely time drinking tea and watching Mian entertain the child, was finally remembered by Loria. He could only put on a long face and go play house with her.

This gave Mian a little free time.

He turned around and looked at the slightly timid little girl who had been standing to the side, occasionally stepping forward to help tidy up the items.

“Annie.” Mian hesitated, then asked tentatively, “Is that your name?”
