    Designer and Weirdo

    “What’s wrong?”

Yan Xucheng feigned shyness again, “I just changed my clothes.”

Jiang Mingyi understood Yan Xucheng just as well as he understood her. “It’s fine, just pretend you’re keeping me company while I eat.”

With a ready and reasonable excuse, Yan Xucheng immediately felt at ease, no longer worrying about the subsequent laundry and other issues. He looked at Jiang Mingyi approvingly, his words sounding reluctant but his voice almost flying with excitement: “Since you want me to accompany you so much, fine then.”

The cat was still downstairs, but this time it didn’t run over to rub against them. It sat upright in place, its tail swinging slowly like a pendulum.

After finishing the hotpot, Jiang Mingyi dropped Yan Xucheng off at the entrance of Redwood Academy. Yan Xucheng pushed the door open to get out of the car, then suddenly turned back and asked, “Aren’t you coming in?”

Jiang Mingyi was silent for a moment. “No, I’m afraid if I go back, I won’t be able to stop myself from telling my parents.”

She looked at Yan Xucheng through the open car door. Although he was nearly thirty, Yan Xucheng completely lacked the typical adult demeanor, still resembling a pure youth. Perhaps marriage makes people grow up quickly. Jiang Mingyi remembered that she and Yan Xucheng used to be the same.

The most significant change was that Yan Xucheng said “home.” His home referred to Redwood Academy, while Jiang Mingyi’s home had become the flat in Zefeng Bay. She didn’t know when Redwood Academy had become her parents’ home.

She took a breath and waved at Yan Xucheng. “Go on, be careful.”

“Bye-bye~” Yan Xucheng stepped back two paces to give Jiang Mingyi room to turn the car around. He waved his sleeve and watched Jiang Mingyi leave until the two points of light, like fireflies, disappeared at the end of the road.

He felt like Jiang Mingyi suddenly had something on her mind.

It was dark now, and lights were turning on in house after house. A single light represented someone being home. The light belonging to his house hadn’t turned on yet. That made sense; yesterday wasn’t a holiday. Lan Lan and Yan Hong must have taken time off, and they probably had to work overtime today.

The landscaping at Redwood Academy was excellent. Even in the slightly chilly early spring, the evergreen trees were neatly trimmed into round shapes, continuously purifying the air.

It wasn’t cold at all tonight. Yan Xucheng stretched, easing his stiff body. The cool air entered his lungs, making him feel completely refreshed. It had been fine while he was with Jiang Mingyi, but as soon as he got out of the car and breathed the fresh outdoor air, he immediately realized he reeked of hotpot.

Yan Xucheng decided to walk around downstairs a couple more times to air out and aid digestion.

His cashmere hunting jacket was sharp and capable, yet the cashmere material added a touch of elegance. Yan Xucheng had excellent proportions, and his dark hair was smooth and thick. Even though his face was unclear in the night, his silhouette alone was attractive. In fact, because his face was obscured, people focused more on his physique.

His figure, often inadvertently overlooked due to the distraction of his striking face, was truly seen: free, casual, unrestrained, elegant, graceful, and yet not lacking in strength.

Feeling that the smell had mostly dissipated, Yan Xucheng slowly headed home. Sure enough, no one was back yet.

Yan Xucheng washed the rice and put it in the cooker before changing into his pajamas.

Yan Xucheng wasn’t incapable of cooking. Even if he hadn’t known how before, three years of wandering abroad would have taught him. Although he only knew a few simple stir-fries, they were sufficient for everyday meals.

When Yan Hong and Lan Lan returned, Yan Xucheng was skillfully stir-frying. Seeing his orderly movements, Yan Hong was full of emotion: “He’s grown up.”

Lan Lan glanced at him, wondering where all his sentimentality came from. “Is this the first time you’ve seen him cook?”

Yan Hong’s emotional flow was interrupted. He shook his head, bent down to place Lan Lan’s slippers by her feet, and then changed his own shoes. “Although this isn’t the first time, it’s still a day worth commemorating! Think about it: we come back after a day of work, there’s warm light, a warm home, and a sensible son cooking. I almost cried just now. This is the happiest day of my life!”

The way he spoke, it sounded as if they didn’t pay for electricity or heating when Yan Xucheng wasn’t home. As for food, had he ever gone hungry? Lan Lan didn’t say any of this. She simply put her bag aside, her voice carrying a hint of imperceptible fatigue. “You have so many ‘happiest days of your life.’”

Compared to her, Yan Xucheng’s father was naturally more emotional. As far as she knew, Yan Hong’s happiest days included: the day he met her, the day he confessed to her, the day his proposal succeeded, their wedding day, the day after their wedding, the day he learned she was pregnant, the day Yan Xucheng was born… every day was his happiest day.

Hearing her words, Yan Hong solemnly grasped her shoulders and looked into her eyes. “Every day I spend with you is the happiest day of my life.”

Lan Lan wanted to say that the “happiest day” could only be one day, otherwise it wouldn’t be the happiest, but she managed to hold back using her years of self-control. Otherwise, Yan Hong would get upset again.

When Yan Xucheng came out with the dishes, he saw his parents standing at the doorway, still in their coats, gazing affectionately at each other. He didn’t know how long they had been looking. He skillfully ignored them, took off his apron, covered his eyes with his hands, and hopped past them to wash his hands, chanting, “Not suitable for minors, not suitable for minors.”

When Yan Xucheng finished washing his hands and opened the door, he saw Lan Lan and Yan Hong lined up at the entrance. He stepped back in surprise. “What are you doing?”

    “Washing our hands.”

    “Washing our hands.”

    So strange.

Yan Xucheng wasn’t hungry. He consciously retreated, leaving the dining table to the old couple, and went back to his room to contact the legendary good person, Lian Mei, the designer.

Lian Mei had already accepted his friend request and sent him a “Beaver greeting” emoji, which looked quite cute. Yan Xucheng quickly saved it and sent back a “Little bird peeking jpg.”

While waiting for Lian Mei’s reply, he opened his email. There was a message from Qishan Private Hospital. He focused on the meeting time, then opened the ticketing app to find suitable tickets.

Just as he entered the destination, Lian Mei’s message came back: “I apologize for not replying sooner. Thank you for waiting. I was just eating. Do you have any questions you’d like to consult me about?”

Yan Xucheng: “I want to redecorate my house. Can we schedule a time to meet in person?”

The other party agreed readily: “Of course! Is the afternoon of the 11th okay?”

Yan Xucheng had to go to Jiangcheng on the 12th, so the 11th was perfect. “Then I’ll see you then.”

    Lian Mei: “Cat expectation jpg.”

This emoji was also adorable. It was his now!

Yan Xucheng saved the emoji and continued buying tickets.

They arranged to meet at a coffee shop to discuss the project. Coincidentally, the coffee shop was near Jing University. Yan Xucheng had graduated from Jing University, and including his graduate studies, he had lived in the residential area across from the coffee shop for nearly six years.

Yan Xucheng deliberately arrived ten minutes early, not wanting to keep the other person waiting. The shop wasn’t crowded at the moment, and he immediately noticed a man with semi-long golden hair, the strands just covering his neck. The man also saw him, his eyes lighting up. He waved at Yan Xucheng, and his wide sleeve fell back, revealing a delicate bracelet on his wrist.

Yan Xucheng walked up to the table and confirmed again, “Lian Mei?”

    “That’s me!”

Yan Xucheng sat down with relief. Lian Mei pushed the menu toward Yan Xucheng. “What would you like to drink?”

Yan Xucheng looked at the entire page of “Coffee” with a troubled expression. He didn’t particularly like coffee, not just because it was bitter. He always felt that coffee tasted like wood ash. As soon as he took a sip, his mouth, nasal cavity, chest cavity, and all his other cavities felt as if they had been burned. He felt like he could sneeze out wood ash.

He flipped the menu over. Fortunately, they sold more than just coffee. His eyes sparkled as he pointed to the green drink: “I want Cheese Matcha!”

Was there anything better in the world than cheese and matcha? No!

The Cheese Matcha was served in a clear glass cup. The bottom layer was milky green matcha, topped with a thick layer of cheese foam, which was lightly dusted with matcha powder.

Lian Mei was drawn to the color scheme. “It’s so beautiful! Mr. Yan, you like matcha?” A thought flashed through his mind. “Do you want this color scheme for your house?”

“Can I?” This was fatally attractive to a matcha enthusiast. His family home was Song-style, his Jing University apartment was wood-style, and his house abroad was minimalist—mostly black, white, gray, and brown. He wanted something different.

When it came to his professional expertise, Lian Mei was full of confidence. “Of course! You can tell me any requirements you have!”

They chatted while drinking. The sunshine felt warm on their bodies. After they finished talking, they still had plenty of time, so they immediately agreed to visit the site for an inspection.

When they came out of the building, Yan Xucheng checked his phone. “It’s already 5:30. How about I treat you to dinner?”

Since Lian Mei had bought him coffee, he could return the favor by buying dinner. Unexpectedly, Lian Mei refused. He looked a little embarrassed. “No need. Someone, someone has already made dinner at my house.”

His face was slightly red. Yan Xucheng wasn’t sure if it was from shyness or if he was cold from the wind outside, as he had noticed Lian Mei was lightly dressed. Seeing his condition, Yan Xucheng didn’t press him. “Then goodbye.”

    “Goodbye.”

The next morning, he boarded a plane to Jiangcheng. After landing, he took a taxi to a hotel near Qishan Private Hospital to check in.

Qishan truly catered to High-Net-Worth Individuals. Although the area was sparsely populated, the nearby hotels were top-notch. Yan Xucheng got his room card at the front desk and pressed the elevator button.

After a short wait, an unidentified, fully-covered person stood next to him. A hat, sunglasses, and a scarf completely obscured their face. Their clothing was also neutral, making it impossible to tell their gender. The only discernible fact was that this person was shorter than him, only reaching his eye level even with the hat on.

Based on the attire, they looked like a celebrity afraid of being recognized.

The unidentified person crossed their arms, glanced at Yan Xucheng, took a step to the side, turned their face away, and let out a cold “Hmph.”

There were only the two of them, so even though the “Hmph” was quiet, Yan Xucheng heard it clearly. He couldn’t help but widen his eyes, his delicate brows furrowing. Heaven knows what he had done to deserve being scoffed at.

Yan Xucheng didn’t intend to confront them. Public figures who were fully covered, regardless of their reputation, meant trouble if approached, and he wanted none of that. But letting this insult slide was even more impossible!
